Chapter 16

When the light was gone, Tenji was floating above the group of people, surrounded by a blood red aura. Her eyes had gone from yellow to red, with slits for pupils. Her stripes had become red as well, but otherwise, she was the same. She looked down at the alters, then at Merope. She had taken the brunt of the light’s explosion, but somehow managed to live. Breathing raggedly, Merope looked up at Izayoi, who was a bit surprised that the little girl had saved her.

“But… why?” Izayoi stammered, looking at Merope and then at Tenji for a brief moment. The little girl smiled weakly, reaching out and grabbing Izayoi’s hand. Merope’s hand was deathly cold, Izayoi almost cringed upon touch. However, she obliged the child, and held her hand.

“You… you’re very strong… if anything, you’ll probably be the only one to stop Otomaru and the new Shinigami… now--” Merope began, before Tenji fired a black colored, thread-like substance at the girl. Upon contact, Merope fell silent, life fleeing her eyes as if it was burned out of her. Tenji chuckled, her voice echoing as though she was far away.

“Pitiful humans…” Tenji hissed, her slit-pupils focusing on each person in the room, “you shall all meet your end soon. It all ends… here and now.” She chuckled and disappeared, the ghostly laughter floating about the area. Otomaru then burst out laughing, receiving several odd looks. If everyone was going to die… what would he be laughing about?

“Shinigami is awake!!” Otomaru said, grinning like a mad man, “and soon, all of you worthless flesh sacs shall be burned to ash!” The others looked at him, then he pointed at a large room on a map. It was a map of the base. “Shinigami is here… like the prophecy predicts. If you want to try to stop her- which you won’t- then you should head there right away.” He chuckled and swung his bokuto at Izayoi, who defended easily.

“You guys all go!!” Izayoi said, pushing a button and opening the door, “I’ll kill Otomaru and join you there!” The others, who were stunned by Shinigami’s awakening, Otomaru’s outburst and Merope’s death, almost didn’t leave. But, with further prompting, they ran, heading for the arena.

“Follow me…” Krad said, his green eye focusing on the others, “Shinigami is at the arena… I’ll take you there.” He frowned, then ran off, watching as the others followed him. Minoru sighed, slightly stricken with grief. He hadn’t known Merope for long, but she was a good kid. Ian patted Minoru on the back lightly as they ran, and he thanked him, but he didn’t know the reason.

***

“So… you’re the mastermind behind our organization?” Izayoi asked, frowning as Otomaru nodded. They exchanged a few blows, then they stopped, looking at one another… relatively calmly. Otomaru looked truly insane. Then, using his power, he made the potted plants in the room grow, and ensnare his female foe.

“Indeed.” Otomaru began, sure to have his monologue, “you see… no one respected my brilliance. They called it madness, but the line between is so often blurred, it’s hard to tell which is which. So, I decided that to compensate, the destruction of all would be suitable. I learned how to summon Shinigami, and then I joined the Hunters, as you know. Soon, I infected Hadden with chishoku… and I forced him to create my plan to bring about the second apocalypse. And now… it’s being realized!” He cackled maniacally, and in a quick stab, he found Izayoi’s nodachi through his stomach.

“Gotcha.” Izayoi panted, grinning at his expression. Then, he started laughing again; it confused her beyond belief. She found out why he was laughing in a few seconds. Sliding himself along the blade, he found it hilted at his stomach. Plants wriggled out of the wound, and entwined themselves around Izayoi.

“Were you trying to kill me?” Otomaru asked calmly, grinning, “I never noticed.”

There you go!! Sorry for the evil cliffies... but they're so much fun to make!!

AEGFF, Chapter 15!!!!
HI HI ALL!! Most of this chapter is from Tera's perspective, so it'll be like she's speaking. ENJOI.

Chapter 15

“Okay, so… where to begin?” Tera asked herself, smiling weakly at Max, “oh, I remember. I’ll start with Mamoru. He was my older and only brother. I loved him much more than my stupid sisters. They were too… girly.” And then, Tera began her explanation. She and her brother got along well because they were always sticking together and keeping an eye out for one another. Tera ended up defending him more than he did for her though. Which led to their final problem.

***

I was sitting in my basement with my guy friends. We were playing foosball; I was winning. Then, Mamoru came downstairs and told me about the party. He said that he couldn’t go, so he’d suggested that I go. When I asked mom and dad, they said no, because I was “too young.” I ran off to my room, which I shared with Mamoru at that time. He came up to speak with me shortly after.

“Hey little sister,” He said to me, “why so glum?” I told him how badly I wanted to go to this party. Even though I knew there would be drinking, I figured nothing bad could happen. Boy, was I wrong. However, Mamoru smiled at me and ruffled my hair.

“Here, sneak out the window. I’ll cover for you.” Mamoru grinned, opening the window for me. I thanked him and told him I would call him on his cell phone if anything was wrong. He nodded, and off I went.

When I arrived at the party, dressed in the nicest clothes I had, I noticed how much of a drinking party it was. Almost everyone was drunk, and everyone was drinking. I had promised Mamoru that I wouldn’t drink, so I stayed away from that table Eventually, the party got too wild for my tastes, so I called my brother. He said he’d be right over. Right about then, a really drunk guy, at least 20 walked up to me and started fondling me.

“Hey baby,” He hissed in my ear; I could smell the alcohol heavy in his breath, “wanna get busy?” I told him no and broke away from him, running away from him. Eventually, he chased me into a bedroom, and pushed me onto the bed. Just as he was started to open up my shirt, Mamoru came and punched him off of me. I was too stunned and afraid to do anything. Eventually, the drunk guy pulled out a knife, and in a silver swish, I heard it sink into soft flesh.

“MAMORU!!” I wailed, kicking the drunk man in the face and kneeling over my brother. His lip was bleeding, and the knife was sticking out from between his ribcage. He felt really cold. Even though I didn’t want to admit it… he was dying. He smiled at me, wiping away my tears.

“Don’t cry, Tera-chan.” Mamoru smiled weakly, coughing up blood, “I was paying back my favor to you. You’ve helped me so many times… I wanted to repay you. Now… please, give me one last hug. I think you owe me this time.” I was crying to hard not to oblige him. I held him close, bawling my eyes out. And, in my arms, my big brother died, a solitary tear falling down his face as he tried to comfort me one last time.

***

“He… he died in your arms?” Max said, stunned. Tera nodded sadly, biting her lip as tears began to flow freely. Without thinking, Max hugged her, patting her head softly. At first, she was surprised, but she hugged him and cried into his chest feebly. Then, she let go, sniffling and drying her tears.

“Now… for father. I think his name was Tora. He died a year ago, just like my brother died two years ago.” Tera said, the autumn wind blowing playfully through her tear matted hair, “they died on the same day, a year apart… and yeah, I was just as close to dad as I was to Mamoru…”

***

“Today’s the day!” I called, smiling falsely as dad looked up at me, “your baby daughter is graduating today!” I hugged dad, smiling as he ruffled my hair. He had become my new confidant; we were closer than ever, and we were close before. Unfortunately, he had to work that day, so he might not be able to make it to the grad. However, mom was going to videotape it so that he could watch it at home if he missed it.

Well, once we were at the grad, all the procedures were done. Speeches were made, and the students were being called up. I was among the first; my last name is Aoki, after all. I saw mom, and my big sisters waving, but no dad. I remember being so mad at him, angry that he hadn’t showed up. I think I’m still beating myself up over it now. Once the grad was over, the police men came up to me. Something about them… it didn’t bode well.

“Miss Aoki…” One of the officers told me, “your father died. He was speeding to get to this point, when a younger driver cut him off. He had to swerve, and his car was hit by a coming semi.” As if that weren’t bad enough, Mr. Happy Sunshine cop had more to tell me.

“He was thrown from the vehicle, and impaled on a sign post. His seatbelt had snapped. We thought he died on the collision, but it turns out he died on the pole.” The officer continued, not noticing how hard I was crying, “he was holding a family photo… we think he was looking at it when he died.” I couldn’t take it anymore. I ran. I ran to were my father was. The ambulances hadn’t even taken him away yet. I hugged my deceased father, bawling my eyes out.

“Why did you have to die?” I remember wailing, swatting at EMS men who tried to pry me away, “you could have lived! This is all my fault! If I hadn’t told you to hurry to the grad, you’d still be alive!! DAD!!” I continued wailing; the ambulance took me to the hospital with dad. They did a scan; it turned out there was a tumor in his brain too. He would’ve died soon either way; it was large and would’ve killed him within days. At that comment, I felt so utterly helpless. No matter what, my wonderful father… Tora Aoki… would have died.

***

By now, Tera was hugging Max and crying again. He two most beloved family members had died within a year of one another. And on the same day. How she’d managed to live with it and keep smiling baffled Max. It was then, at that exact moment, he realized something. He didn’t like Tera.

He loved her.

   Fake Wings, Chapter 15!!!!
YAYZ!! I shall have them up tonight!! MOO HA HA!!

Chapter 15

Hadden and Otomaru saw Izayoi’s gestures. The chubby man recoiled slightly; Izayoi was their strongest warrior. Otomaru tossed his pink hair, patting the old man on the back reassuringly. The boy drew his bokuto, the wooden sword made of very fresh wood.

“Don’t worry, Hadden-sama… I won’t let her touch you.” Otomaru said icily, glad that Izayoi still had to go through another room to reach them. During this time, he could go and fetch Tenji; her day of reckoning was soon to come. The bodyguard left his master, running to where Tenji resided. She was practicing her abilities; she now moved so fast that she was a mere blur amid the dark room.

“What do you want, Otomaru-san?” Tenji asked, looking at the boy in an annoyed way. He had put on a frightened guise, and it was working perfectly. The fox girl saw it and recognized it; Otomaru was never afraid unless it was serious.

“Izayoi!! Izayoi’s been brought back to life and she’s trying to avenge you by killing Hadden!” Otomaru exclaimed, crocodile tears streaming down his face. Tenji was alarmed; it sounded like something her best friend would do. ‘But… I don’t want to be avenged…’ She thought, clutching her umbrella. Then, she bucked up, and flew out of the room, heading for Hadden’s room. Izayoi would be getting a not so pleasant surprise.

***

“This little piggy went to market…” Izayoi hissed, chopping of Hadden’s baby finger, “this little piggy stayed home… this little piggy had roast beef, and this little piggy had none!!” She cackled, watching as the fat man writhed in his chair. His mouth was gagged; no screams were emitted. Minoru, Merope, Ian and Krad didn’t dare watch; it sounded gruesome enough as it was. Then, there was a sickening sounding slash, followed by a flopping body and a gasp.

“He… he’s not a real person!” Izayoi said, ushering the others over, “look… his body is full of plants; there’s almost no blood left! But how?” The others were equally as puzzled. Even Merope, who was familiar with even the oddest of alter powers, didn’t recognize this sorcery. However, their trail of thought was interrupted by the sudden interruption of a flying umbrella. It hit all of them, then flew back to it’s owner. Izayoi recognized her immediately.

“Tenji!!” Izayoi cried, running up and hugging her friend, “I saw you die… but how--” She was unable to finish her sentence. Tenji had slapped her hard with her umbrella. The raven haired woman staggered slightly, backing away from her friend. At that moment, she noticed all of Tenji’s changes. Her fur was black and her hair was gray. Her eyes, once green and happy, were yellow and melancholy. She had sprouted wings, covered in thin, orange leather.

“You didn’t have to avenge me, Izayoi.” Tenji said, smiling sadly, “I’m just glad you’re alive. However, I can’t forgive you for killing the man who gave us our home. I challenge you to a fight, here in my living grave. It’s just how I’d like to go.” A tear rolled down her face, then she ran up to her friend at blinding speed, tackling her into the wall.

Izayoi coughed up a little blood, but pulled out the kodachi attached to her boot and threw it at Tenji. The fox girl rolled out of the way; at this rate, Izayoi would never hit her. Sighing, Izayoi unsheathed her nodachi, and their climactic clash began. Sparks flew as the reinforced parasol collided with the gigantic katana. They eventually repelled one another, leaving the other alters stunned.

“You’ve gotten better,” Izayoi said casually, stabbing at her friend, “who’s been training you?” Tenji blocked the strike and pushed her friend back, grinning.

“I’ve been training myself.” Tenji smiled, throwing her parasol at Izayoi, knocking her friend over, “I wanted to get ready to kill Hadden to avenge you.” Izayoi looked dumbfounded, but wound up defending against Tenji’s body charge when she went to grab her umbrella.

“That’s odd. I was avenging you.” Izayoi asked, “how is it that we were led by a plant?” Then, the answer came as a bokuto grew into the room and slashed at the two women. Otomaru stepped into the room, grinning at the alters and Izayoi. His tossed his pink hair, bringing the wooden sword to surround him.

“I did it.” Otomaru grinned, “Hadden used to be a man… before I infected him with chishoku plant. It ate up all his blood ‘till he could only run on the power of the plant, which I controlled.” He chuckled, and then, all became clear. Otomaru was a rogue alter. He controlled plant-life, which was why he had a wooden sword.

“Y’know, I suppose I’d better awaken Shinigami.” Otomaru grinned, holding his hands in an irregular position. They were clamped together, his forefingers intertwined. Then, he began chanting, and Tenji stood stock still. Her body began emanating a black glow, and Izayoi backed away, looking at her friend. Tenji’s eyes rolled back in their sockets, then, there was a bright flash of light. The drop of a body could be heard, flopping lifelessly to the ground. Someone had died.

AEGFF, Chapter 14!!!!
Here's chapter 14! Enjoy!!

Chapter 14

Thanksgiving was coming, and Max was a little worried. I hear you ask, “why is he worried, Mr. Narrator?” Well, reader, it is because Max, Ms. Marpole and Goofy were invited to Tera’s house for Thanksgiving dinner. Max accepted eagerly, as he liked spending time with her. However, the time went by quick, and before they knew it, it was Thanksgiving. Max reminded his dad not to do anything that might end up causing damage to Tera’s house, her family, or even Goofy himself.

“Aw shucks, son,” Goofy said, ringing the doorbell, “you act like I get into accidents all the time.” Max sighed and watched as his father managed to knock himself off the porch. How he did it, no one knew. All they knew was that he was very good at it. Tera answered the door; the house was full of women. An older girl in a lab coat was making the stuffing, and two girls who looked similar facially and bodily were preparing a salad. A blonde woman with blue eyes was currently washing the turkey.

“Hey guys!” Tera greeted them, pulling Goofy out of the bushes and getting the other guests into the house, “c’mon in. Oh, these are my sisters and my mom. Mako, Hana, Sora and Anna.” She grinned, first pointing at the girl in the lab coat. Next, she pointed at the girl with short hair and glasses, then the girl with long, blue hair. Lastly, she pointed at the blonde woman, who looked awestruck at Goofy.

“George Goof?” Anna said, squinting at Goofy, “after all these years I finally see you again?” Max looked at his father. George? After all these years, that was his dad’s name. It surprised him, but Ms. Marpole seemed to already know. Tera shared Max’s surprise; how was she to know that their parents already knew one another.

“Gawrsh, hello Anna.” Goofy said, unused to being called by his name, “sorry about setting your hair on fire in 12th grade…” He smiled weakly, and Anna looked as though she would set Goofy ablaze where he stood. Her hands shook; it looked like she was ready to tear the turkey in half.

“Oh sure, now you apologize! Y’know, if Tera didn’t like your kid, I wouldn’t let ANY of you into my house!” Anna yelled, throwing the turkey into the sink and storming out of the room. Tera apologized and said it was her mother’s “time of the month” and began washing the turkey. Max, Goofy and Ms. Marpole were told to feel free to look around; Anna would calm down eventually.

“Hi, my name is Hana.” Hana grinned, grabbing Max’s hand and shaking it, “this is my twin sister, Sora. Mom’s a bit bitchy, but you’ll get used to it.” She grinned, running a hand through her pink streaked hair. Sora walked over and shook Max’s hand; aside from the different hair colors, the two were exactly alike.

“My name is Sora. We own a hair salon downtown… a lot of your classmates drop by! You should too.” Sora winked, “you’re cute.” Hana punched her sister and mentioned something about marriage, and then Max noticed the twins’ wedding rings. They must’ve been married; Tera never mentioned her family in normal conversations.

“Leave the poor guy alone,” Mako said, peeling apples for the stuffing, “he’s already got a girlfriend.” Sora pouted and walked away, heading back to the kitchen to finish the salad. Max noticed a big cabinet full of trophies; Soccer Champion, ’95, Tennis Champion, ’87, Football Champion ’94… there were too many to list. Then, Max looked above the trophy cupboard; there were all sorts of photos. There was one of Hana and Sora opening their hair salon, and Mako accepting an award for something. Then, Max noticed a family portrait. Tera and her mother were present, but there were two unfamiliar men in the photo.

They were both fairly handsome, and it was easy to tell which one was Tera’s father and which one was her brother. They were both rather handsome, and Tera’s dad looked fairly young. Her brother took after her mother, but was still handsome. The date on the photo was from about 3 years ago; they all looked a lot younger than they were now. Max grinned and looked at the girls, who had come into the living room and were talking.

“Hey, who are these two guys?” Max asked, gesturing to the photo, “are they late?” The reaction he got was a room full of shocked faces. Tera, who was in the kitchen chopping onions stopped, hiding her face behind her hair. Hana, the one least phased by Max’s question, was the first to speak.

“They died.” Hana said bluntly, “they could’ve been saved… they died in such stupid ways.” There was a loud THUNK noise from the kitchen. Tera had stabbed the cutting board, and had tears welling in her eyes.

“Don’t you DARE speak about Mamoru and Dad like that!” Tera shouted, rage shining in her eyes, “you didn’t see them when they died! You were too busy at your stupid hair salon!” She then stormed out of the kitchen, going into the backyard and slamming the door. Anna had come back into the room just in time to hear the yelling. Max, Goofy and Ms. Marpole just looked stunned.

“Great, just great! Max, why don’t you go and console my daughter,” Anna said, “and you two,” she gestured towards Goofy and Ms. Marpole, “might want to go outside… I need to speak with Hana.” The three nodded and obliged Anna, leaving the room as though she was a bomb ready to explode. Max found Tera on the back porch, dangling her legs off it as she cried.

“You okay?” Max asked, sitting down next to her. She looked at him and nodded, looking down at her hands. It seemed she’d accidentally cut her finger; it was bleeding slightly.

“Thanks for coming out to talk with me…” Tera smiled, “would you like me to tell you about my father and brother? I think it might make this easier on me.” He nodded, and she prepared to tell him about her two favorite family members’ deaths.

   Fake Wings, Chapter 14!!!!
'Tis chapter 14! It's a bit short, but it's all good. ENJOY!!
Chapter 14

Merope clutched her side, blood staining her fingers. Izayoi chuckled, flicking her nodachi so that the blood formed a line on the wall. The little girl gave Izayoi a deadly, look, standing straight as though she hadn’t been injured. Then she noticed the bandages on her ribs. She hadn’t recovered from Minoru’s attack when she’d assaulted the alters. Merope grinned, and readied her chakram.

“Stop smiling, Merope. You’re going to lose anyway.” Izayoi frowned, looking at the little girl. They ran towards each other, weapons raised high. Metal clashed as the two fought, sparks showering down upon the ground. The two broke apart, both glistening with sweat. Izayoi’s white eye focused on Merope; she’d almost forgotten its chilling effect. Just like she’d forgotten to block Izayoi’s sword strike. The sword pierced her body, but had missed all vital organs. Minoru gasped in shock and Ian retched, the sickening stench of blood overpowering.

“I am sorry, Merope, but no one kills Hadden-sama but me.” Izayoi whispered, “You’ll be fine if that Alter boy can heal you.” She smiled faintly and pulled out the sword, allowing the girl to fall to the floor. In a fit of rage, Minoru tried to attack Izayoi, but to no avail. She blocked his scythe easily, stabbing him with a dagger she had hidden in her boot.

“You’re a monster!” Minoru spat, “you killed a child!” Izayoi looked at him, her blue eye full of contempt. She picked him up by the scruff of his shirt, looking him in the eye.

“She’s fine. Now, escape while you can. I don’t want to kill you, but I will if I must.” Izayoi hissed, Minoru spitting into her scarred, white eye. She threw him into the wall, leaving a sizable dent. Ian was busy healing Merope, who had passed out. Izayoi walked over to him calmly, kicking away his hand when he tried to cut her.

“Kitty needs to be de-clawed. If you came here to kill Hadden, you’re not going to.” Izayoi hissed, “no one kills him but me.” Ian looked surprised; even Hadden’s workers wanted to kill him? He must’ve been a terrible person. Or at least it was definitely becoming something to consider.

“We’re here for revenge! Has Hadden ever taken away everything you ever knew--“ Ian had begun, before Izayoi kicked him in the face. There were tears in her eyes, and looked like she was both mad and upset. Ian didn’t know why, but he was more afraid of her now than ever. She advanced upon him, forcing him into a corner.

“You have no idea what he put me through! I saw every member of my family slaughtered before my very eyes! My only friend died and I buried all of them! I’m sure what you saw was bad, but it couldn’t have been as bad as what I’ve seen!” Izayoi shouted, punching Ian in the face every once and a while, “I’ve seen countless murders ordered by Hadden! I’ve even exacted a few! You think you hate Hadden, but you don’t have enough reason!” Ian smacked her in the face, drawing a blank stare from the hunter.

“Then why are you fighting us? We all have the same purpose here.” Ian said, looking at Izayoi, “Let’s all kill Hadden… together.” He held out his hand, ready for it to be shaken. Izayoi was muttering something incoherently, shaking her head.

“But we can’t… it’s--”

“You know he’s right Izayoi.” Krad said, having walked into threw room, “we can all kill him together.” He smiled, nodding towards Ian’s hand. Izayoi sighed in resignation, and shook the alter’s hand.

“Fine… but I call dibs on torturing and killing Hadden.” Izayoi said, pulling Ian up, “now heal the others. Hadden still has plenty of men.” She grinned, readying her sword. Then, she pointed at the camera, making a slice gesture in front of her neck. Hadden was going down.

   AEGFF Chapter 13!!
Well, here's Chapter 13!! Oh, if you want an explanation of why this is up so late, just read the foreword on Fake wings.

Chapter 13

Saturday rolled around; the week seemed to have blurred by until the day of their date. Max picked Tera up, saying they were going to the mall to hang out. Joyce knew better, but said nothing and waved the two friends off. If they had their way, they would be more than friends after this day. It was raining outside; Tera brought her umbrella to cover the two of them. Sadly, her umbrella was filled with holes, and they ended up getting wetter under it than they would have without it.

“Sorry ‘bout that…” Tera grinned sheepishly as they entered the mall. Max told her it was no big deal, and they began to explore the building, looking for somewhere to go. Eventually, Tera pointed out a hat store, called Chic Chapeau. Apparently, it meant “Cool Hats”, but Tera explained that to Max later. She grinned, and they ended up trying on a whole bunch. They found all sorts of hats, from jester hats to baseball caps. Eventually, Max bought Tera a baseball cap (he’d insisted on buying it for her.) and put it on her head.

“Oh, Max!” Tera said dramatically, pretending to swoon, “I shall never remove it! Ah!” She grinned at Max, punching him lightly in the arm. He returned the friendly gesture, and they continued through the mall. They’d gone to many men’s clothing stores; Tera personally didn’t like shopping in girly stores. The two of them found a store called “Xtreme Boutique”, a store that sold skateboards, clothes and other sorts of equipment. Tera came out dressed like what most people labeled “skater”, but she just grinned and said showing her boxers was something she didn’t like to do. The two of them bought a few pairs of clothes, Tera insisting that she pay for her own.

“So… how’s it been so far?” Max asked, while chewing on his burger, “the date, I mean.” They’d ordered some food from McDonald’s; mainly because its lines were the shortest at the moment. She grinned at him and took a bite out of her burger, then a sip of her soda.

“It’s been great.” Tera smiled, looking up at the digital clock on the wall, “holy crap, it’s getting late. Let’s get back before the rain gets worse.” She crammed the rest of her burger into her mouth and chewed it, grabbing Max’s wrist and taking him back to the entrance. They finished the rest of their food and continued the walk back to the dorms.

“Wait!” Max said, stopping Tera’s pull, “I’ve got something I want to show you. Follow me.” He grinned and ran off, leaving Tera to follow this time. Eventually, she followed him to the park, where a large crowd of people had assembled. She was curious as to what was going on, until she saw a set of waterproof fireworks shoot into the sky. The brilliant lights glowed bright, the colors that were associated with Thanksgiving appearing in the sky.

“Whaddaya think” Max asked, walking up to Tera, who looked awestruck. She was still wearing her baseball cap, and was holding her umbrella by her side. She looked at Max and smiled. Something wet rolled down her face; Max assumed it was the rain. She ran forward and hugged Max, grinning slightly.

“It’s wonderful… thanks for showing me.” Tera said, smiling. Then, Max began to leaning for a kiss. Tera was a bit surprised, but obliged him right away. They kissed passionately for a few moments, but it seemed like forever. But, before the happy feeling sunk in, Tera broke the kiss, looking up into Max’s eyes. She looked as though she felt guilty, turning away from Max.

“I… I’m sorry Max.” Tera said, putting a hand on his shoulder, “but, you’re just on a break from Roxanne… I couldn’t steal such a great guy from her.” She smiled sadly and kissed him on the cheek. Then, she ran off, heading for the dorms. Max stood there, dumbfounded, and reached out for her, even though she was gone. He sighed and looked down, noticing her hat had blown off.

Max eventually arrived back at the dorms, knocking on Tera’s door. She answered it, surprised to see Max so wet and sad looking. He smiled at her and put her hat back on her head. She looked up at him, her turn to be dumbfounded. Max’s smile had faded, and he looked very sad; sadder than she’d ever seen him.

“Tera…” Max said, brushing her hair out of her eyes, “if there’s any chance… even the smallest chance… that we could ever go out again, just wear that hat to class on Monday. Then I’ll be sure that this date wasn’t a total bust.” He smiled and kissed her on the cheek, walking away, his head bowed. Tera looked at Max, a strange pain in her heart. She sighed sadly and went back into her room, waiting for Monday.

When Max got to class on Monday, he didn’t see Tera around at all. He sighed; he was hoping she’d come. And just when he thought she wouldn’t be there at all, she came. Her hair stuck out in odd angles, as it always did, and she was wearing her pajamas and bunny slippers again. However, something was different about her usual morning antics. She was wearing the cap.

“Hey Max.” Tera yawned, sitting next to him, “I’m sorry for hurting you on Saturday… if you and Roxanne ever break up… just know that I’ll be around to pick you up.” She smiled and kissed him on the cheek, before falling asleep at her desk again. Max just smiled and brushed her hair out of her eyes, making sure to take notes for the both of them.
