500 HITS!

Let him think I am more man than I am and I will be so.
- Ernest Hemingway

Greetings All! I hope you’re all having a wonderful day! Mine’s all right. Not really a lot to say unfortunately. But, felt like posting anyway, for one reason and one reason only, I GOT 500 HITS TODAY! ^_^ Thank y’all SO much! It means a lot to me that y’all care enough to come back and visit me 500 times! Apparently my life isn’t as dull as I sometimes feel it can be. So, thank you so much!

Costume Conundrum
After my last post, many of you were wondering what kind of costume I had chosen to do for Halloween. Well, I had chosen Haku from Naruto. I really like his costume and he is an awesome character as well. Actually, he’s one of my favorites from the series. So, I felt it was meant to be. But, as you read, fate had other things in mind. The costume I ordered was too small, so I emailed the woman who made it to ask her what could be done to fix this little problem. Well, I got a response today. She apologized repeatedly for the mistake and wishes to get it fixed. So, she has asked for me to email her my measurements again so she can redo the pants. Unfortunately, it won’t be ready for Halloween, but at least it will get done, right? And, no extra charge is required. She really is a great seller. I’ve been impressed with her patience and cooperation. This still doesn’t restore my faith in Chinese costume makers, but at least everything is going to work out. So, if any of you actually prayed that it would, thank you for your prayers.

On-Go-ing
Well, I still haven’t received a response from the SGA about my potential Go club. I’m on pins and needles, really. It pains me that I’m not getting a response. I want to know! But, this is the SGA we’re talking about here, and they aren’t really known for their efficiency. So, for all I know, it could be a couple weeks before I get an answer. And, I don’t know if I can hold my sanity that long. I might have to start bugging them if I haven’t heard anything by next Monday.

Well, that’s about all I have for today. Yeah, the posts are getting shorter and shorter. It’s all due to the fact that nothing really interesting has happened in the last few days that warrants a post. After this weekend I should have something to say. Look forward to it! Until then, I wish you all a great day and I’ll see ya ‘round TheO! Sayonara!

Post of a Drunken Man (Not Really)

To be a boy is to be a fool. And being a fool is pure bliss.
- Hajime Ueda

Greetings All! Today has been an interesting day… kinda. But, isn’t that the way that days are supposed to go? I hope so. Because most of my days are interesting… kinda. So, would that make today an average day or still and interesting one… kinda? I’m confusing myself, so if you understood that, let me know maybe. And, no I’m not drunk, I’ve never been drunk in my life, but if this post comes across sounding that way, it’s the fatigue.

Go Club Yerself!
Yeah… I pitched my Go club to the Student Government Counsel thing tonight. Maybe it went well and maybe it didn’t. That is in kinda the mode where you don’t know what might happen. Wow, that made no sense. I need caffeine. Anyway, as I was attempting to say, I’m not sure how things really went. They seemed receptive enough, but were not sure that an entire club devoted exclusively to Go was necessary when we have a board game club on campus already. Bah! That’s what I say to them and their stuff… er… that’s the only word that’s coming to mind. Yeah. Go is so much superior to other board games it shouldn’t even be in the same category. It’s a game in league of it’s own. But, that was their main complaint. I’ll let y’all know how things turned out when I hear from them tomorrow sometime.

Pigs Were Flying on Friday
The impossible has happened. I, the non-gamer, has found a game I can get addicted to. On Friday I took a trip to the local Hastings to buy a book for my Western Civilization course and while I was there I, for some reason, stopped by the gaming section. I found Soul Caliber II for the Xbox for a wonderful price and thought I’d buy it. Since then, a day has not passed that I have not played it for at least an hour. This is a bad thing. I don’t want to get addicted to a game. Not now. I can’t afford it. I NEED MY TIME! Grrr… But, I do like my Taki.

In China I’m Shorter
My costume arrived today in the mail. But before that makes any sense, I should tell you something different. I decided to order a costume off of eBay for Halloween. Thought it would be fun. I found a woman who could make me a custom fit costume, so I took advantage of that. I sent her my measurements and everything, but when my costume arrived today, I realized that something was amiss. When I attempted to pull on the pants, I couldn’t get them over my thighs, and when I put on the shirt, I quickly realized that I needed to loose about 20 lbs before it would be comfortable. Thus, I have learned one essential thing, I shall never order a custom fit costume from China again. This is going to get fixed, hopefully, but I’m not holding my breath that I’ll ever see a costume that fits, or my money. Please pray that things work out.

And with that I’ll consider myself complete… er… my post complete. I don’t know if I am complete or not. Maybe I am. Anyway, I’ll be signing off now, have a great day, All! Sayonara!

The Best Weekend EVER!

The pursuit of happiness is a most ridiculous phrase; if you pursue happiness you'll never find it.
- C. P. Snow

Greetings All! I hope you’re all having a wonderful day! It’s time for what has become my weekly blog post. It sucks that it’s become weekly as opposed to more than that, it’s just with everything and the way it has fallen, I just don’t have the time for much more than that. So, yeah, if you’ve had a problem with my blog only being updated on a weekly basis, suck it up, cuz it’s not changing. On with the post! Well, before that, I guess I should clarify that title a bit. It wasn’t the best weekend ever. The best weekends are those spent at conventions or traveling and stuff, but as far as weekends being spent on campus though, this one took the cake.

Friday
It started off extremely boring. In fact, it set a record for boredom (which is probably one reason it ended up being so good). By 3:00 on Friday afternoon, I was already bored out of my mind with no plans for that evening. Yeah, a horrible way to kick things off. I typically hit that boredom stage at about 8:00 not 3:00. But, things got better. I heard from one of my friends that he was holding a DDR party in his dorm again. So, I made plans to go to that, but first I went to dinner. Again, dinner started off very dull. I was one of a whole 15 people in the entire cafeteria. Lets just say, most people leave campus on Friday nights. I sat down by myself at a table, expecting to eat fast and get to the DDR party. That isn’t what fate had in mind. I was soon joined by two of my newer friends, both new to campus this year and both very interesting people. The first was a guy named Aaron. He’s a 5th year college student who just transferred here from some other school I don’t remember the name of. His parents are the missionaries in residence on campus. Really cool guy, very sociable. A conversation with him cannot be boring in the least. And the conversations I had at this particular dinner table were anything but boring. The second person who showed up was a girl named Jessica. Really nice girl! Very cute, very nice, sociable, and a fun person to be around. I eat with her on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at lunch, but rarely eat with her at dinner. Our schedules coincide that way. She is also a transfer student from some smaller community college in Virginia where she’s from. She’s my age. Both of these people are involved in the anime club on campus and Aaron is very gung-ho about the go club I’m starting. So, I spend a lot of time with them.

Anyway, dinner took much longer than I had thought it would. I got there at about 5:15 but we didn’t end up leaving ‘til about 7:00. The conversation went in many directions. Now, apparently I have leukemia and will die on the day before Halloween. They have a memorial service and funeral all in the works. Of course, I’ll be giving the eulogy. ^_^ Yeah, oddness. This is the way conversations go around here. But, the one aspect of the conversation at dinner that impacted the entire rest of the evening was Jessi’s “complaint” that nobody ever comes and visits her in her room during visitation hours. Aaron and I ran with this. We decided not to allow this travesty to continue. Jessi needs visitors! So, after dinner, we allowed her time to go and straighten up her room or comb her hair or do whatever it is that girls do before guys visit their rooms, before we actually went over there. It was quite fun! We sat and talked in her room for about an hour and a half. It was a blast! It’s a much more homey of a room than mine is. Very well lit, pictures on the wall and stuff. Just nicer. But of course that is to be expected. She is a female after all, and I’m not. So yeah. Conversation had worn down a bit after an hour or so and I, being the total film addict that I am, suggested a movie. Everybody seemed up for it, so we went! On the way there we dropped by the mall and got a couple manga though. Aaron bought his first manga! YAY! The virus is spreading! He bought the first three volumes of One Piece. I bought the second and last volume of a wonderful manga called Q*Ko-Chan. It’s by the same guy who did the FLCL manga. Same art style and everything. So pretty! Jessi bought the first volume of a manga I had never heard of called Zyword. I’ll have to get her opinion on that one after she finishes it. After the bookstore we went to the movie. We saw Man of the Year. It’s the new Robin Williams movie about a TV political commentator of the variety of John Stewart and Jay Leno who runs for president and wins. So, suffice it to say, it was hilarious. A very good movie, one I’ll probably end up buying. I liked it. Once back on campus after the movie, we spent another hour or so just standing in the parking lot talking. It was very fun, again. I don’t know, I never had so much fun just talking in my life. It was a blast. But, I had to cut the conversation off short because I had work on Saturday morning and needed my sleep. After all, it was like 1:30 at this point. So, that was Friday.

Saturday
Not quite as interesting as Friday, but still good. I spent the majority of Saturday at work. As I’ve said before, I work in the university call center raising money. This weekend they decided to bring in a professional consultant to help us out with our calling. He gave us a long 2 hour talk before we actually started our shifts. But the shifts were organized much differently than normal. It was a regular four hour shift, but we had been split into 3 groups. One group at a time, we all went into a conference room and spent an hour and twenty minutes listening to the other callers and critiquing them. As much as you might think me dumb for saying this, it was actually quite fun! It’s interesting listening to the way other people structure their calls and making adjustments because of it. It apparently really helped me out, because once I started calling, the first two people I talked to made pledges. After those two pledges, it put me in the number one slot. I would have been the number one caller out of the entire group if not for a guy named Chris. Backstory: we don’t have enough callers so the administrators in charge of the phonathon decided to give bonuses to people who got people they knew to apply for positions. I was talking to Chris earlier that week and talked him in to applying. Well, the first two people Chris talked to made pledges, just like me, but his were a little different. One of the two people he talked to pledged $1200! That’s the highest pledge yet, and that one pledge is greater than the total pledges of any one caller to date. Also, since he only talked to two people the entire day, and both made pledges, it means he has a 100% return on his calls, and nobody else has that, the best to this point had been something like 32%. So, he’s now in the first position. Grrr… My downfall is of my own doing! Oh fate, can you not give me a break! ^_^ Yeah, it was a good day at work. Being the number two caller is not bad at all. I like it. The rest of Saturday went as planned with Anime club later that evening and all. It was good.

Sunday
All right, Sunday is probably the most interesting out of the weekend, but all at the same time it’s not. Here’s how it goes. I was up ‘til about 4:00 on Sunday morning because the network administrators got lazy and I have wireless access in my room (temporarily of course). So, I was taking advantage of that. So, I wasn’t really in the mood to get up at 9:00 to go to church. So, I slept in. I slept in ‘til about 1:30. It was nice! Unfortunately, lunch closes at 1:30 on Sundays, so I had to eat ramen in my room. Well, I didn’t even change out of my pajamas to do that, so I decided to keep going. I just never changed out of my pajamas all day and spent the entire day being a lazy ass. I spent most of the time in my bed watching television. Since I rearranged my room last weekend, I have been able to see my television from my bed. So wonderful! Yeah. I did nothing all day on Sunday. By far one of the best days I’ve had all semester. I can’t even do that kind of stuff at home. Heh heh! So, yeah, I was lazy all day Sunday. Saw a lot of good movie though! And I’m trying to catch up on Bleach. So, it was productive of a sort.

Well, that was my weekend. Great don’t you think?! I think so too! Very awesome! Best weekend yet. Unfortunately I don’t get more of those. I guess the whole thing with this one was that I dind’t make plans to try and do any of this. It sort of all just happened spontaneously. Maybe spontaneity isn’t as bad as I had assumed? I’m so scheduled even when it comes to my free time, I don’t really do very much spontaneous stuff. I’ll try fix that to an extent. After a weekend like I just had, it can only be for the better. I hope you all have a wonderful day and I’ll see ya ‘round TheO! Sayonara!

Comic Day! (YAY! ^_^)

Life is tough, and if you have the ability to laugh at it you have the ability to enjoy it.
- Salma Hayek (who knew the woman was profound?)

Greetings All! I hope you're all having a wonderful day! Mine's been rather busy. Well, more than busy, packed. In fact, my entire week has been packed full of stuff with little to no time for writing posts or anything of the sort. So, that's why I haven't been here (and for those of you who actually talk to me on AIM, that's why I haven't been there as well). The week should be dying down though. After tomorrow at about 4:30 I should be free of most everything that has been on my plate. I have two projects that are due tomorrow, and I have a test. So, that fact that I am posting means that I've gotten sick of studying and work and wish to have a little down time. It's natural, right? Yeah, I think it's natural ^_^. So, with all luck, I'll be free for some actual posting and chatting at around noon on Friday. And, mom, I'll be writing out the rest of the memoirs at that point. I know I've been telling you I'd get it done, and haven't, but this time I mean it. It will get done on Friday. So, you have my permission to really nag me about it badly if it doesn't get done. Yup!

All right, well, because I don't really have a whole lot of time to waste on posting right now, I'm going to let you all laugh a little bit with a few comics that I've read recently which I found funny. So, enjoy!

I have had many of these moments. It's the kind of feeling you get when you've been up all night studying for a test. Yeah, that's the perfect condition you need to be in in order to take a test successfully. Heh! Now, ya gotta wonder about the logic in this.

Technology hates me. It really does. I swear, the only purpose for it's existence is to make my life as miserable as it possibly can. I realize this, but then I ask myself, "why am I in a career path that requires my expertise of certain forms of technology?" Ironic, eh?

The number of times I have told people about my interests and had this kind of reaction is too many to count. This was basically my life at work over the summer. I had my interests and the entire rest of the office had theirs. It's so wonderful to be so unique ain't it? Yeah, I like it, but is it really worth being so separated from American society? Just something to think about.

Well, I hope you all have a wonderful day and I'll see ya 'round TheO! Sayonara!

Just A Few Things

Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present.
- Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

Greetings All! I hope you’re all have a wonderful day! Mines been all right. I made a little “oopsie” in my graphic design class today. Our latest assignment was a stationery package for a fictitious company. One of the stipulations was that we had to use all black and white with the exception of ONE Pantone color. I somehow missed that little detail. My project had three Pantone colors. So, I’m sure I’ll get a little mark-off for that, but not that big of one. Other than that it accomplished the goal. So, yeah. A bummer, but not a total loss. Bad Caesar! Pay more attention in class! *hits head* I'm in college, i'm better than this, or at least I thought I was. ^_^ It's just been an odd week for classes altogether. Odd things have been happening. It's not that I'm doing poorly and missing assignments, because I'm not (so don't worry Mom). I don't know. There really isn't much I can do about the problem either. I just need to be a little more on the ball. I'm too easily distracted. Grr... Hopefully after this coming weekend everything will "clear up." Please pray for that. ^_^

Me, The Telemarketer
Well, last night I started my new job. Yahoo. My job is to call parents of past students, past students, and friends of the university to ask them to pledge money to the scholarship program here at the university. The job pays well (it’s the highest paying student job on campus), has great hours, and is really flexible with my schedule. So, it is the perfect job for me. Almost… It’s a very very stressful job for me. I’m not exactly the best with talking on the phone, and as far as sales go, I’m not the best at that either. So, it’s hard for me to really talk to people about this stuff. Perhaps it was just because it’s my first time doing this, but at the end of the shift last night at 9, I was so tired from all the stress that the last four hours had put me through that I was ready to go to bed. I didn’t go to bed, instead I went to one of my friends dormitories and played DDR for about two hours, but that’s beside the point. I hope it gets easier for me, or at least less stressful. I have high hopes. If after about 6 shifts I’m still getting all stressed out and losing my energy, I’ll consider quitting. But as I said, I have high hopes that this job will get better. Please pray for this as well.

Fearless
On Friday this past week I saw Jet Li’s new movie, Fearless. It was VERY good! I loved it! It had a great message too. The guy I went with, a friend of mine named Sam, came out saying it was probably his favorite movie (and he doesn’t say stuff like that very much, so I’m inclined to take him seriously). It certainly makes you look at yourself and think, am I living right? I’d tell you more, but it might ruin the movie for ya. It’s not a Christian movie, but the message it sends across is very much Christian in relation. It’s actually a Taoist message. WARNING! Don’t read past here if you don’t like spoilers of any kind! Jet Li’s character starts the movie as a very prosperous son of a martial arts master. His only desire is to be a better fighter than his father, and this leads him to his downfall. He retreats from the city after his downfall and goes out into nature. In nature he finds his true happiness and his soul is cleansed of all the evils that city life had imposed upon it. Then, realizing that he must return to the city and make restitution, leaves and starts a new life. You may begin reading again. Yeah, if you haven’t seen the movie yet, I STRONGLY suggest you go see it. It’s not just a martial arts movie, it’s a martial arts movie with a kick butt story line and really deep message. So, it’s got something for lots of people. Yuppers. So, that’s my plug for the movie. ^_^ Hollywood should be paying me for the reviews I do for them. Really. I give some of the movies such good reviews, it’s just GOT to increase box office sales.

Well, with that I’m going to call myself done. Yeah, short eh? I hope you like that. There’s lots more I could post on, but I’m just not in much of a mood today. I might post again on Friday. This coming weekend is my fall break. So, I’m going back home and taking somebody with me. Unfortunately this person I’m taking with me doesn’t get off class until 4, while I get off at 11. And Life Returns to Normal

A thinker sees his own actions as experiments and questions--as attempts to find out something. Success and failure are for him answers above all.
- Friedrich Nietzsche

Greetings All! I hope you’re all having a wonderful day! Mine’s going all right for now. Unfortunately it hasn’t been too productive yet, but that should be changing soon. I’m meeting with the Dean of Students in about two hours to talk with her about starting up a club on campus. I’d like to start a Go club. Go, if you didn’t already know, is an ancient Chinese strategy game. I got really into it over the summer when I started going to the go club near my house. Unfortunately, there isn’t a club in the area of my college, and due to the crappy web service on campus, I can’t even play online. So, in order to satisfy my drive to play this game, I’ve decided to start a club. I really hope it works out. I’m not fully sure of what all I have to do to get this thing started. I think I have to send a petition around campus to survey the potential interest in the club, I have to sign an agreement with the university to somehow “impact the community” be it on campus or off, and I think I need to get faculty support for the club. Although, that is only what I have heard around campus from people who haven’t actually gone through the process themselves. So, the information isn’t too reliable. That’s why I’m meeting with the Dean of Students. I’ll just wait and see how it goes.

Darkness Descends
One of my friends on campus had come into possession of a rather large collection of eggs. Apparently he went to Sam’s Club with his parents before coming to school and bought about 5 dozen of the lovely elliptical objects. Well, after 5 weeks of class, the eggs were approaching their expiration date, so he decided to try and get rid of them all by throwing and “egg party.” So, Monday nigh, I and three other people converged on his little house to eat more than a healthy portion of eggs.

While we were chowing down on the white and yellow goodness and watching television, the power began to flicker. The television started turning on and off and the lights upstairs began doing the same thing. Not the entire house though, just the upstairs lights and a selection of other electrical appliances. That sort of ruined our television watching plans, and having eaten more than my share of eggs at that point, the party was brought to conclusion. I went to the student center to browse the internet. Lack of interntet service, probably from the same odd power fluctuation that I had experienced back at my friends house, foiled my browsing plans. Now I was irritated. So, with a black cloud of irritability hanging over my head, I trudged to one of my friend’s rooms to see if he was having any luck with his internet. He wasn’t. After a few more circles around campus I ended up back in my dorm where I was met in the staircase by my RD (residential director) who informed me that they were going to be shutting down all power in ten minutes. Ten seconds later the power went out. It was really cool too! The lights went off starting from the top of the buildings down. So, it really looked like darkness was actually descending on the campus. It was freakishly cool! The power stayed out for about an hour. During that time I sat talking with guys from my dorm hall under the one emergency light we had. Interesting conversation. A couple guys had light-up Star Wars light sabers and started dueling right there in the hall. Their battle eventually migrated out into the quadrangle outside my dorm hall where they were joined by other idiots fighting equally pointless, although colorful, battles. After the power returned I went to the student center once more to access my email and see if anybody was on AIM. Then, it was off to bed for me.

Anime Club Irritants
I have been a little disappointed with the way the Anime Club on campus is being run. As I might have told you in a previous post, I was appointed vice president of the Anime Club. The president has been doing some really stupid things and isn’t listening to any of my advice, nor the advice of the rest of the club's attendees for that matter. He’s been doing stupid things like starting an anime and then not ever finishing it, cutting a show off halfway through to switch over to CN to watch Trinity Blood and Bleach (both of which everybody in the entire club has already seen the beginning of), and showing anime (get ready for it) in ENGLISH (BLASPHEMY!!!)! But, that’s not all. One of his little irritating qualities as a leader is the fact that the man doesn’t lead. He feels like he has to put everything in the entire club up to vote. I’ve tried to tell him multiple times, without luck, that putting everything up to a vote just complicates things. Everybody in the club has tastes that vary too greatly to put things up to a vote every time we show a new anime. It just doesn’t work. Also, this little democracy prevents people from ever seeing anything new or that they haven’t heard of. If they haven’t heard of it or seen it, how are they to know what it’s like in order to vote on it. Some AWESOME anime that I have suggested, such as Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror, Haibane Renmei, Jigoku Shojo, and Genshiken, have all been shot down in the vote because nobody knew about them and therefore didn’t vote on them. So, we are stuck watching only the popular anime, which isn’t bad, but isn’t good either. We don’t get any variety this way. We only get to watch stuff that stays within the norm. We aren’t watching anything that pushes the limits of animation and storytelling, or that has a story that doesn’t conform to the anime norm. Everything we watch ends up being an action comedy mixed with some aspect of romance. Nothing original. My hopes for the anime club this year have been completely crushed by the lack of leadership skills in our “leader.”

But the WORST thing that this guy has done is shorten Anime Club. We are no longer meeting for six hours like we used to. Rather, the man has shortened it by a full two hours. Because of this, we aren’t going to be able to show anything that goes any longer than a season. I was hoping to be able to show some anime that were a little longer, but since anime night has been shortened, we can’t do it. We used to be able to watch a full season in two nghts, now it takes three. Also, a half-season long anime goes for one and a half nights. That’s just irritating and I think it’s going to cost us attendence. I don’t like what he’s doing to the club. And, I’ve been talking to a few of the other member’s of the club who are also irritated with his performance as a leader. He’s just not very good. I try to tell him about the error of his ways and convince him otherwise, or at least get him to see the other side of an issue, but he won’t budge. He’s too stubborn. So, I’ve given up on trying to do anything with the club. I’m just going to show up. He apparently doesn’t think he needs my help anyway. Grrr…

Sorry about that little rant. It’s just been on my mind lately. We get to see the middle portion of Last Exile this coming week. The middle! There will be no intro, because we’re stating in the middle of the show. And, there will be no conclusion, because we’re also stopping in the middle of the show! That’s just not a very good way to do things. Anyway, I’ll spare you further rantings on this issue. I promise, unless the man does something profoundly stupid or actually gets something right, you won’t hear from me about the club anymore. Lastly, I recommend you all take another glance through my Anime Ticker. I have made some significant updates over the past few weeks. Perhaps I've seen something you've been wanting to or you have some comment you'd like to make on what i've seen. Feel free to PM me anytime if you would like to chat about anything! ^_^ So with that I wish you all a wonderful day and I’ll see ya ‘round TheO! Sayonara!

And A Great Day Was Had By All... ^_^

The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis.
- Dante Alighieri

Greetings All! I trust you are all having wonderful days, just like me ^_^. I like good days! Today wasn’t all that exceptional really, except that my classes today were some of the coolest yet! I am really beginning to love my Mass Media/Mass Culture course more and more! It’s just so cool! All it really is is a study of American culture and how the media (newspaper, television, radio, movies, music) affects it. Today we started our look into radio. And, being probably the biggest media event in the history of America, we got to listen to Orson Welles’ 1938 radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds. SO COOL! I mean, I had heard that it caused mass panic and all and that the broadcast was a major historical event, but I had never really taken it all that seriously. But, today when I listened to the broadcast for the first time, WHOA! I can really understand how people could have taken this seriously! It was awe-inspiring. I loved it! Also, in my graphic design course we did a little more study into the inner-workings of Adobe Photoshop. My professor taught us a couple methods of using the program, both of which I would probably not developed on my own for quite some time. It was a very useful day of learning! I mean, I am beginning to realize very quickly that I am in the right field of study for me. Because I LOVE THIS STUFF ^_^! Yeah, so my day went well. If you had asked me three years ago I’d have never thought I’d be saying this, but I LOVE SCHOOL!

My Italy Trip: Day 2 (Click Here To View Pictures)
I know you’ve all been waiting patiently, so I am pleased to bring to you my recap of the second day of my family’s trip to Italy. Enjoy!

As stated before, after all of our wanderings around on Day 1, we ended up staying the night in Florence. So, Florence is where we spent Day 2 of our trip. It was NOTHING like I had expected it would be. Although, I don’t understand why I would have thought anything different. I guess, when I think of Italy I think of old brown stone and brick buildings with vines growing all over them and sunlit streets. Florence was nothing like that. It was just like any other European city you’d visit. It had very narrow streets which intertwined among themselves like a grapevine. The buildings on all sides were at least 4 stories tall, so they blocked most of the sunlight from reaching all the way down to street level. And, like most European cities, it had a river flowing through it; the Arno. I mean, nothing really special about this city at first glance. Rather dull actually. But, our travel throughout the day proved the city to be anything but dull.

Our first stop of the day was Florence’s duomo (again, Italian for church). The structure itself has an extensive history and is rather famous for being an archeological first. At the time the structure was built, most cathedrals in Europe had domes which were Gothic in architecture and had domes supported by flying buttresses. The design proposed for the construction of this particular cathedral was unique in the fact that it did not use the conventional flying buttress. On top of that, the structure’s dome still holds the record for the largest cathedral dome in the whole world (143’ in diameter. WOW!) So, to say the least, seeing this structure in person was quite the treat. I loved it! The outside of the cathedral was decorated in a fashion similar to the one we had seen in Orvietto. Very intricate, very beautiful, very white. We were lucky to have seen the front of the cathedral soon after it had been cleaned. The face of the cathedral seemed to gleam, even in the light of the overcast and rainy day. Unfortunately, the entire structure was not so clean. As we walked around the outside, near the back the wonderful white face turned to more of a brownish gray. I respect the city of Florence for attempting to keep their duomo so clean. There were other duomo’s we would later see in the trip which were not so well kept. So, yes the entire thing wasn’t perfect, but at least we got to see the front of it. As amazing as the outside was, the inside of the building was less than awe-inspiring. As usual it was very dark and very gray. Nothing much to really comment on other than the underside of the dome which looked to have been coated with gold. It was all lit up and was quite beautiful. Of course, it wasn’t coated in gold, there were paintings all over it which were quite amazing. And, it was so high up! The artist, whoever he was, must have not had any fear of heights. Quite spectacular.

From the duomo we went and found ourselves some lunch. It was a good lunch. We got the normal Italian food of “panini” style sandwiches (and Italian bread sandwich of any sort which has been toasted). They were still pretty good to eat at this point, but give it a few days and I started getting sick of ‘em. We took our sandwiches out into the Piazza Della Signoria. Not all that impressive of a piazza. Though, it did have a few random statues strewn about, including a replica of the David. At first I was confused as to why, but soon I was informed by my dad that we were standing in the piazza which directly borders the Uffizi Gallery. We didn’t have a reservation there until 1:00, so after we all finished our sandwiches, we yet again split up and went our separate ways. My mom and sister went over about a block to see the Ponte Vecchio, a famous bridge over the Arno that is lined with fancy jewelry stores. My dad and I chose to walk down the Arno River to the San Croce cathedral. The cathedral itself is a very typical gothic style and thus not all that unique from other cathedrals from the outside. But, it is what is inside this cathedral that makes it so famous. Michelangelo Buonarroti, Dante Alighieri, Galileo Galilei, and other famous men chose to have their tombs placed in this cathedral. This is something that neither my dad nor I had realized until we got there. In fact, once we got to the cathedral and seeing it’s rather unappealing exterior we debated on whether to pay the entrance fee or not. I’m very glad we did. Had I learned that I was so close to these tombs and not seen them, I would have been devastated. My mom and sister didn’t have the same kind of luck that we did. They were expecting to actually buy some of the jewelry on the Ponte Vecchio, but everything was overpriced. A bummer.

Having reunited back at the Uffizi, we waited in a rather short line to get in. After entering we viewed all the artifacts that this museum had to boast. The most memorable portion of the museum for me would have to be the busts of all the Roman emperors which lined the main hallway that ran the length of the building. Some of them were quite spectacular while others were broken and chipped. It has been too long for me to remember much else from inside the museum. There was a lot of stuff in there. Unfortunately we weren’t allowed cameras in there, so we weren’t able to take pictures of any of the more interesting artifacts. I wasn’t all that bummed about it at the time, but now I am ^_^.

After leaving the Uffizi, we headed back to the hotel to have a little break. It had been a lot of walking so far that day and we were all tired. The break was refreshing and we all felt energetic when 5:00 began to roll around. That is the time at which we had reserved to go to the Accademia Gallery where Michelangelo’s David resides. The Accademia was specifically built to house the David back in 1873. It has since attracted other artifacts, mostly Byzantine art, but there are also various unfinished pieces of Michelangelo’s. The statue itself stands prominently in the center of the gallery. It is MUCH larger than I had thought it would be. Its size really astounded me. I was also quite astonished with the craftsmanship of the statue. It looked so real. It amazed me that a person really could carve something like that. I didn’t think it seemed possible. And, for a couple artists, it was. Before Michelangelo, two other artists had attempted to carve from the same piece of marble and had failed because of an imperfection which ran through the length of the block. That’s not the most impressive part though. At the time he carved it, Michelangelo was only 25! 25! Gah! 5 years older than me and the man is able to create something of that skill and magnitude. The man makes me look like the monkeys from 2001: A Space Odyssey banging on bones with a club. That’s called talent, people. There is no other non-blasphemous explanation. I was in awe.

The Accademia was the last place we visited in Florence. So, upon leaving, we headed back to the hotel to take showers, kick back, and wait for dinnertime to roll around. Dinner that evening was rather special for me. Not only was it a good meal, but it was also the first meal at which I drank a wine. There is no drinking age in Italy, so it was perfectly legal for me to have a drink. And, I guess my parents thought Italy would be the best place for me to have my first drink, because they actually encouraged me to have a glass. I enjoyed it! It was quite good! I thank them for allowing me to try it.

Well, with that I’ll call my post complete. I’m sorry for it’s length, but Day 2 was a big day for our trip. But, if you thought this was long, wait for Rome. Heh heh! Yeah. ^_^ Well, I wish y’all a wonderful day! I’ll see ya ‘round TheO! Sayonara!

Ah, Another Post... Finally

There is an ecstasy that marks the summit of life, and beyond which life cannot rise. And such is the paradox of living, this ecstasy comes when one is most alive, and it comes as a complete forgetfulness that one is alive.
- Jack London

Greetings all! I apologize greatly for not posting in a while. I really need to work on this. It seems that every time I post I’m having to apologize for a long absence. That’s just not right. But, worry not, it is something that I plan on fixing very quickly. I should be on a little more often now. So, on with the post.

Internetwork Deficiency
The biggest reason why I haven’t been posting in a while is the fact that I can’t connect to the internet for and extended amount of time. Long story short, the Ethernet port on my computer was fried last semester by a bolt of lightning and it hasn’t worked since. This has limited me to just being able to use a wireless connection. At home this isn’t a problem because we have a wireless network which encompasses the entire house, but at school it becomes an issue. There isn’t a wireless network which reaches into my room. So, I have to take my computer out into the student center (which is conveniently located in the same building that my dorm is) where there is a wireless signal. Unfortunately there isn’t an outlet out there, so I can only stay connected to the internet as long as my battery power lasts. And, I’m sorry to say that this little blog isn’t very high on my priorities list. ^_^ Anyway, the entire thing seems to have been fixed. There is this wonderful little device called a USB Ethernet adapter. It plugs into one of your USB ports and has an Ethernet port on the other end. Basically, it allows you to run an Ethernet cable through your USB port instead of your Ethernet port. Really cool. There was a little snag when I couldn’t find one that was compatible with macs, but at that has also been fixed. So, I’ll be posting more often now since I have easier access to the internet.

Anime Fest!
The weekend before this past one, I was down in Dallas at Anime Fest! It was an awesome convention! I love the guests that Anime Fest can get. This year Yoshitoshi ABe (no the capitalization of the B is not a mistake), Yasuyuki Ueda, Monkey Punch, and FLOW were the premier guests. ABe-san is best known for his character design work on Serial Experiments Lain but he has also done character design for Haibane Renmei (an anime which he himself wrote the story for), NieA_7 (which he also wrote the story for), and Texnolyze. Ueda-san is a producer and has worked closely with ABe-san but has also done work on other anime including the music production for Escaflowne. The panels that these two men held were quite interesting. I went to two out of four of them. They are some interesting people. I’d go into more depth on what it is they said in the panels, but that would take too much time. Monkey Punch is actually one man (who’s name I forget) who did the original manga for Lupin III. I did not manage to get to any panel with him. In fact I started doubting near the end of the convention if the man even showed up at all. Bummer if you ask me, I was kinda wanting to see what the man had to say about being a manga artist in Japan. FLOW, the last major guest, is a J-rock band who has done songs for anime such as Naruto, Eureka 7, and the upcoming CLAMP anime entitled Code Geass. They are one of the more popular bands in Japan and this was their first trip to the U.S.. They really seemed to love it! I went to their panel where they boasted that they had gone to Ft. Worth (a city near Dallas), gotten burgers at McDonalds, and bought cowboy hats. They seemed pleased with their reception at their concert as well. And they should be pleased! Their concert was incredible! I thought it was too short, but that it just the way things go. They played a lot of great music, they had great stage presence, and overall made the experience a really enjoyable one. I hope they come back to the U.S. sometime. I guearantee them a good reception. I hope the crazy otaku at the con didn’t scare them off ^_^!

Windy City Wanderings
This past weekend I and three of my friends set off on a trip north to Chicago to see John Mayer and Sheryl Crow in concert. It was about an 11 hour trip up there. Somehow we managed to pull it off in 9.5 with an extra hour added on for lunch. The car ride was actually very boring. Not much really to do. So, I tried to put it to good use. I actually typed out the beginning of this post at 6AM on a road somewhere in Missouri. I also spent my time reading. I read a couple manga volumes and I started reading a book I need to read for my Western Civilization class this semester. But, even with all that activity, the majority of the trip up there was spent just sitting looking out the window. Although, with the air conditioning out in the care we were driving, I developed a new appreciation for wind in the hair. It’s so fun!

Upon arrival in the Chicago area, we attempted to find a hotel. It was harder than I had assumed. We managed to snag the last room in the area. And when I say the last, I mean the last. We had to stay in a smoking room with one bed (not good if you’ve got four people in your group). So, needless to say, I slept on the floor that night. From there we went to the concert. GAHH!!!! It was SOO GOOOOOOD! Hands down the best concert I’ve ever been to. Yeah, the KOTOKO concert at A-Kon this past summer was great, but this one beat it out easily. I actually enjoyed the Sheryl Crow half of the concert more than I had thought I would. She’s quite the singer. Although the highlight of the concert was John Mayer. I swear, he is by far one of the best musicians of today. I can’t really express to you how awesome he was. Just know that I thought it was the best thing ever! Heh heh! Yeah. I’m definitely going to be buying his CD tomorrow when it comes out. A few people up in the front row of the concert actually got the CD while at the concert. John Mayer himself handed them out at the beginning of his encore. Oh how I envied them. He performed 5 or 6 songs from his hew CD and the rest of the concert was his older stuff. And, from what I heard, his new CD is going to be FANTASTIC! So yeah, great concert. Definitely made the long trip worth it.

Sunday morning our little group decided to travel into the city of Chicago itself and wander around a bit. I’m actually the only person from the group who had been there before, so I became sort of a miniature tour guide. Yeah, I know practically nothing about the city, but practically nothing in comparison to nothing is something. So, we did a little circle around downtown Chicago. We walked down Michigan Ave. past Grant park, Millennium Park, and the Chicago Art Institurte. We went through the shopping district on N. Michigan Ave. and turned off onto Ontario. A couple blocks down Ontario there is a little pizza restaurant called Pizzeria Due which we decided to stop in. I apologize for my language, but DAMN THAT WAS A HELL OF AN AWESOME PIZZA! It was the best pizza I have ever had. It was so piled up with stuff that I only barely managed to finish one slice before I was full. I can typically down about 4 slices. Chicago deep dish is definitely something you must try, if you haven’t. The pizza itself was exceptionally priced too. So, it was cheap and spectacular. Stomachs overflowing, we left the Pizzeria and headed back to the train. And, then we were off back to school. A great weekend. September really has been quite the month for me.

Well, with that I’m going to be off. It’s been a long post and I’m sure your as tired of reading as I am of typing. If you’re wondering what happened to the rest of my Italy trip, don’t worry, it’s coming. I’m typing out the rest of it in one big “memoir” and will post it in segments once I get it finished. I wish you all a great day and I’ll see ya ‘round TheO! Sayonara!

I'm Back!

As a well-spent day brings happy sleep, so life well used brings happy death.
- Leonardo da Vinci

Greetings All! I greatly apologize for not posting in such a long time. You know how it goes. I had my trip to Italy (which you should all be aware of) and then I had my first week of classes. That and my own laziness has prevented me from posting in so long. So, truly, I apologize. But, I have returned and plan on sticking around for a while! I’m sure that brings tears of joy to your eyes ^_^ !

The First Week
So, with that over with, I can confidently say that this past week has been a pretty good one. My first week of classes went by with virtually no hitches! I love it when that happens. I’m taking pretty much all art classes this semester. I’ve got my first graphic design course (YAY!), I’m taking a mass media/mass culture course (the study of American pop culture and how media affects it), an animation course, and a digital imaging course. The only class I’m taking that isn’t an art course is my western civilization course. So, suffice it to say, I love every single class I’m taking. This is going to be such an awesome semester! The only hitch in the week had nothing to do with school itself. It was my roommate. The one who I had been assigned before the school year started just never showed up. I never got word as to what was going on with him, but he’s not coming this semester. So they shoved some other guy in there with me. But, for the first 3 days of class, I had an entire room to myself. That was great! And as it’s looking now, I might just have the entire room to myself for most of the year because it’s been three days since I last saw my roommate. He hasn’t even returned to change clothes or shower. I don’t know what’s going on with him, but I’m fine with it. If he doesn’t show up by Monday I’m going to report it to the R.A.. Though, as of now I’m not too concerned. And that was my week!

My Trip to Italy – Day 0 and 1 (Click Here for Photo Album)
It was a long trip. Lots of stuff happened and there is a lot to report on. So rather than reporting on the entire trip in one post, I’m going to do a day or two of it with each post. It is courteous to you, the readers, and it frees up my time since I don’t have to sit down and type out a massive post. So, without further ado, on with my trip!

If you read the post I did right before this one, you can hear about pretty much most of how my day of travel went. I have affectionately labeled that day Day 0. Nothing of real importance to the week happened so I don’t really consider it to be much a part of the trip. Just know that my family and I eventually arrived in Italy with all our baggage accounted for. After we landed in Rome, we immediately rented a car and took off north towards Florence. We stopped for the night in a town called Orvietto. Thus ends Day 0.

We kicked off Day 1 by taking off in our car towards the old city. Orvietto, like most (if not all) cities in Italy was once a walled city. Inside the wall, not much of the city has changed since the Middle Ages. This is part of what makes Italy such a cool place to visit. Not only are you visiting a foreign country, but you are also visiting a living piece of the past. So cool! We didn’t stay long in Orvietto. Of all the medieval walled cities, it is not the most spectacular, but it’s duomo (“church” in Italian) is absolutely incredible! The structure itself is amazing, yes, but it’s what they put on the structure that made it so captivating. They actually put mosaic tiles all the way up the front of the building. I’m sure that in the right sunlight, the entire face of the building would glimmer as if speckled with thousands of priceless gems. Quite an amazing structure. The inside is much less spectacular and in comparison to the outside of the building, quite bland and boring.

Our next stop on Day 1 was a small city (if it can be called that) about 45 minutes outside of Orvietto called Civita. The “city” itself is perched up on top of what appears to be a peak. There are only 15-or-so permanent residents of the city. Most of it has been purchased by rich Romans and Florentines who use it as a summer retreat. There was once a natural bridge to get over to the city, but that has since eroded away and there now stands a long man-made walk bridge which spans the cavern. We spent about an hour or so exploring the little city. It was really amazing. It fascinated me that people actually lived in a place like that. Very cool. Check out the photo gallery of Day 0 and 1 to read and see a little more about the city.

From Civita we went further north to Siena. Siena is considered to be one of the best preserved Medieval cities in all of Italy, if not Europe. And, after seeing it I can understand why. It is very Medieval looking. All the streets are very narrow, all the buildings are 3 to 4 stories tall, there is a large piazza (“plaza” in Italian) at the center of town where they would have set up a marketplace. The function of that piazza hasn’t changed much either. It is still used as a marketplace and there are restaurants all around the side of it. We ate lunch at one such restaurant. Although, that is not the only use for the piazza. Twice a year it is converted into a horse-racing track and bleachers are set up all around. We were there the week of this biannual festival. There were banners set up all around the city for the 9 districts which compete in the race, there were bleachers set up, and there was apparently an abnormally large number of people in the city while we were there.

Our last stop of the day was a small town near Florence called San Gimignano (pronounced Sahn Giminyahnoh. I hope that helps a little ^_^). It was one of my favorite stops of the week. This city was also a walled city, so I knew kind of what to expect. What made this city so interesting was the way it was built. There were tall towers throughout the city, the well they used to use was still in place (and still had water in it!), the walls were all standing and from the top of them there were some spectacular views. But, the towers are what really makes this city such an interesting place. I really felt like I was in the middle ages. I had a blast exploring this city with my dad. My mom and sister unfortunately didn’t join us on our little expedition. They decided they wanted to shop. So, we let them shop on the main street of the city while we explored. They missed out. It was an awesome place. From San Gimignano we drove to Florence where we spent the night and all of Day 2. Look forward to my next post to hear about Florence!

With that I’ll consider my post to be complete! I’m going to try to make it around to a few or your sites today. I apologize in advance if I don’t make it to yours. I hope you all have a wonderful day and I’ll see ya ‘round TheO! Sayonara!
