Sally Avril was part of a group of kids in Queens, New York, consisting of Liz Allan, Tiny McKeever, Seymour O'Reilly, Jason Ionello and Peter Parker who were friends since Elementary School. But by the time they arrived at Midtown High School, Peter had drifted apart and the clique was taken over by new student Flash Thompson. From that point, Sally wanted nothing to do with Peter, shooting him down when he asks for a date in favor of "dream boats like Flash Thompson" and coaxing Liz away from Peter rather than offer sympathy after the death of his Uncle Ben.
Always craving excitement and fame, Sally gets her kicks by being an accomplished, blue ribbon winning High School gymnast. Always willing to appreciate a practical joke for the excitement it would bring, Sally is the only member of the group who approves of Jason's prank of stealing Peter Parker's clothes from his gym locker. Convinced that the others disapprove of this theft because it wasn't concocted by Flash, Jason comes up with a new scheme and invites only Sally to join him. The Daily Bugle has previously offered one thousand dollars to anyone who can discover Spider-Man's true identity. Jason and Sally plan to be the ones to win that money.
Prowling the city at night with a pair of binoculars, Sally and Jason come upon a meeting between Spider-Man and Batwing. By this time, most of the enthusiasm for the project rests with Sally. While Jason worries about the safety of the part of town they are in, Sally revels in the excitement. This difference of opinion is only expanded when Spider-Man discovers them and warns them off the hunt; but while webbing Jason's feet to the floor, Spidey merely gives Sally an affectionate pat on the cheek. Still trailing Spider-Man, Sally and Jason witness the wall-crawler committing a robbery unaware that he has inadvertently been brainwashed by Dr. Winkler who is working for Electro. At the villains' hideout, Sally snaps a picture just as Electro prepares to unmask the hypnotized Spider-Man. The flash bulb wakes the web-slinger from his trance but he is still on the verge of being defeated by Electro when Sally staggers the villain with a kick to the head; setting him up for defeat by a punch from Spider-Man. The wall-crawler shows his gratitude by taking a picture of Sally and Jason standing over the unconscious Electro. It appears on the front page of the Bugle with the headline "School Kids Foil Super-Villain".
A few years ago, in the village of Malpura, Bangladesh, in a normal day as so many others, a pall of thick, black fog came down, coating people in a dark sticky substance, that seared the eyes and lungs and clung to the skin like burning oil. 4,000 died, and the survivors were contaminated for life with some kind of virus. They accused AGK Incorporated of being responsible for a chemical leak, but AGK tried to cover it up. They denied the accusations, until a protest at the United Nations forced AGK to pay 9 million in compensation.
Present day. Tara, supposedly a Buddhist Goddess, sought vengeance for the villagers. It is possible that Tara is just a mutant, who was present in Malpura at the time of the poisoning, seeing she is infected with the virus herself. She stole the Star of Persia, a jewel worth 50 million from the vaults of AGK. Then, she lead Spider-Man to AGK's trail, and he dug up info on the Malpura incident. Finally, she set up clues for Spidey to follow her, and arranged a meeting with AGK CEO Kirkland and Security Chief (?) Corman.
In that meeting, she asked for another 50 million for the victims; Corman pulled a water gun filled with a watered down version of the virus, and said "no". The weaker version of the virus would still be lethal to Tara, because she had already been exposed. Corman and Kirkland have an argument concerning the first's methods. Corman reminds Kirkland that he has security videos that proof Kirkland is as deep in it as himself, and tells the CEO to shut up and let him do his job. He reveals that the C.I.A. paid them 100 million dollars for an undetectable intelligent metal nano-virus to be released into a non-threatening environment. AGK tested it on Malpura's villagers.
Spidey shows up in the nick of time, when Corman was about to shoot Tara. A drop of the watered down virus burns Spidey's arm. The virus links Peter and Tara's mind, along with the minds of everyone else who died in the village. Peter's spider-sense attunes to the consciousness of those who designed the virus, and it is revealed that the virus is an intelligent metal entity with a single mind designed to enhance latent human/mutant tendencies for application in military conflicts.
The Empathoid was created by an extra-dimensional race at some point in the past, although it is unclear how long ago that was. Its masters created it to be a superior android servant, one which would be better attuned to its human masters because it shared their feelings. However, once it tasted emotion, it craved more, ever stronger, ever more violent. It eventually exhausted and outlived its creators, leaving it stranded on its now uninhabited world. Without emotions to give it purpose, it eventually lapsed into a dormant state below the surface of a temple on its world.
The pseudo-vampire known as Morbius used the dimension-spanning palm-bands of the Living Eraser to flee Earth to prevent him from making any humans his victims. Unwittingly traveling to the Empathoid's realm, his strong emotions caused the Empathoid to awaken. The Empathoid entered the form of Morbius and forced him to use the palm-bands to return to Earth, where it could feed on the emotions of its inhabitants.
The Emapthoid forced Morbius to attack others while it fed on the fear and panic he generated, until his rampage drew the attention of Spider-Man. Spider-Man managed to defeat Morbius, but the Empathoid then took possession of his form. The Empathoid directed Spider-Man to seek out battle, which he found in Morbius, who now attacked him in an effort to destroy the Empathoid. Spider-Man managed to defeat the Empathoid, by bringing his battle with Morbius to a football stadium during a game. The magnitude and intensity of the emotions present there caused the Empathoid to overload and deactivate. Spider-Man took the form of the Empathoid to the Baxter Building for safe-keeping.
The Empathoid derives energy by draining the emotions of others. Its form was designed to be self-regenerating and virtually indestructible, making it effectively immortal. Its form is semi-solid, allowing it to contact others, but making it immune to most forms of physical attack, as most objects pass straight through it. It can merge with its intended victim and feed off of his or her emotions. It communicates telepathically with its victim and can cause him or her intense physical pain if they do not obey its wishes. It gained power from intense emotions, although there was a limit to how much it could absorb before overloading.
The Jackal is the Alter Ego of Professor Miles Warren, one of Peter's Biology Professors from Empire State University. Miles was deeply in love with Peter's girlfriend Gwen, who was also one of his students. When Gwen died, Miles cloned her from tissue samples taken during an earlier school experiment.
Miles also cloned Peter and himself. If you've been reading the recent issues then you'll know all about Ben, Peter, Kaine, and Spidercide. The first Miles Warren clone was left too long in the tank, and developed a virus which turned it into Carrion - who gave Peter such trouble in the a fabulous run in the early Spectacular Spider-Man.
The original Jackal wore an tight-fitting Olive Green costume with a slightly furry appearance to it. Dr Warren was remarkably well muscled. The outfit had razor-sharp claws which were typically tipped with some sort of drug. Physically he was no real match for Spider-Man, but with planning, psychology, and by enlisting several allies he was able to overcome Spider-Man on numerous occasions.
Supposedly, the recent Jackal was actually the original - having used a clone of himself to fake his death in ASM #149. He then placed himself into suspended animation in a cloning pod, to awaken later physically improved.
Jason Phillip Macendale was a C.I.A. agent, whose methods were too violent to his superiors' taste. He got kicked out, and decided to start a life of crime, using his expertise in various fields to aid him. Macendale's life as Jack O'Lantern wasn't very sucessful. He was defeated on his first battle, by Machine-Man. He simulated a coma, to be transported to an Hospital instead of a jail. While taking over the place, he had his first meeting with Spider-Man, and was beaten again, though he realised he was no match for Spidey, and attempted to flee. During his run with the pumpkin on his head, he met Spidey several times, and also ran into Silver Sable. His next encounters with Spidey ended up like the first, until he was hired by the Kingpin, during the Gang War. By that time, he had a partnership with the Hobgoblin (Ned Leeds, posing for Roderick Kingsley), but that dissolved when he refused to chase Spider-Man with the Hobgoblin. He then saw fit that he should be the Hobgoblin, so he hired the Foreigner to kill Ned Leeds (just like Kingsley wanted when he leaked the word that Leeds was the Goblin). When Leeds died, Macendale took the mantle of the Hobgoblin, with the general populace thinking he was the same Goblin, with him thinking he was the second, and with Kingsley knowing he was the fourth. For the rest of Macendale's story, go to Hobgoblin IV's profile.
Macendale has no known connection to the second Jack O'Lantern (identity unrevealed) or to Jack O'Lantern III, other than that the original image and name were directly ripped off (and the second also used weaponry like his).

What do you call beautiful Mr. Crows?
Something that once glowed with love
By loving all that is becoming a slave
Shackled by hate. Hate that makes
there blood cold and black
What is delicious to you Mr. Crows?
False hope of one that kills in the name
Of his earthly lord. The dance of fools
Is what I create in man to feed on it
We will have to kill you now Mr. Crows
You know this no doubt.
Try and your souls will be consumed
Along with you sin soaked bodys.
