Loneliness
What effect does loneliness have on a person’s life? In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, a phenomena of human nature, loneliness, is examined throughout the story. Loneliness is used to show the negative consequences that may result from one's own desires.
The author uses the character, Victor Frankenstein, to show the irrevocable affects of loneliness by allowing his own solitude to be the cause of the story's main conflict. In his quest to create a companion for himself, Victor accidentally creates a "monster", who in his own ignorance, becomes a threat to himself, as well as to the rest of society. Due to Victor’s feeling of loneliness, after giving life to such a creature, he feels as if the only way to right his wrong would be to unleash this "monster" into the world where he feels that his creation will be alone.
The creature is exposed to the painful reality of loneliness from the moment of his creation. As soon as he is created, he is abandoned. The loneliness that the creature feels draws him to an indelible life of feeling hatred and the need for revenge on all humans. The creature's solitude causes him to perform horrible actions such as murder, because he too desires a companion. In order to obtain this companion, the creature continues to kill whom ever it comes in contact with until he comes in contact with Victor himself, so that he can demand that the he creates him a mate. The creature seems to be a victim of his own misfortune and feels as if his troubles will be over when he receives a companion.
In conclusion, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein shows that loneliness can penetrate into a person’s life and eventually affect them in ways that not even they themselves can comprehend. It can lead to a life of dour, and can ultimately be the cause of undeserved death.
