My Avatar

Hi I just found this site. I really love anime. I am old for an anime fan (late 40's)but fairly new to the scene, only about 8 years The first series I followed was Cowboy Bebop. I worked late night shift and when I got home at 2:00 am I could go to sleep so I would turn the TV on. One night I was going thru the channels when this wierd (at least I thought so at the time) cartoon with funky music came on. I was hooked from the begining. I have about 10 anime DVD from Akira to Lain. I just purchased my full series Genshiken. I am just starting to read manga and Genshiken was my first series. I plan to do some reviews of anime that I watch and manga I read. I know some of them are old series but they are new to me.

   Samurai 7
I am currently watching Samurai 7 on the IFC channel. The way the animation was done is quite different from other animes I have seen. It looks as though it was painted with watercolor. The outlines are muddy and almost appear to be floating. The story itself is a retelling of the Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samaurai. The comic relief of the show is Kikuchiyo (キクチヨ, Kikuchiyo?) who mechanical samurai, who is constantly trying to prove he is a samurai. At one point he goes so far as to pull out a scroll which he claims is his family history. Unfortunately for him it quickly becomes clear that he can't read, he points to a name on the scroll and says thats him. Another member of the group notes that the name is of a 13 year old boy.

In truth only 4 of the 7 are Samurai in the true sense. Hayashida Heihachi is a samurai who has never fought a battle in his life and spent the war as a mechanic. Okamoto Katsushiro is a young swordsman who wants to be a samurai, he is granted his wish when Shimada Kambei the wisest of the group tells him he is the 5th samaurai.

The atmosphere is a mixture of the medival Japan and a futuristic world, where the capital floats in mid air. I like the series so far, although its is not my favorite.
