Pulling a Wii
We're going to pull a Wii with the new myOtaku :-). I have no doubt I'll get a lot of early backlash but I also have no doubt, long-term, it'll be a huge success.

How Are We Doing Now?
So I got impatient and dove into the server and made a few changes. I don't really know what I'm doing but the site feels better to me now; is the issue fixed?

How is speed/reliability going????

Some people are reporting that the site has been slow/unreliable lately, that random pages will sometimes not load

Are you seeing this issue at all?

Update: OK, I'm convinced. We have our best person on it!

I enjoy rocking the boat sometimes, ala my previous post...

Question of the day: If you could make a second myOtaku site, what would it be about?

Man, I can't believe I've been programming every day, hours per day, for over 45 days now; on top of everything else. So much is finished but so much is left...

I read a fascinating research article about dating. The points may or may not apply to you but were proven to be the case with a large statistically significant sample size:

** Girls typically prefer guys of their own ethnicity. The only exception is that Asian girls don't discriminate against white guys

** Guys don't typically care about ethnicity when choosing a dating partner

Say what you like about us guys, but at least, in this one way, we are the more racially tolerant of the genders :-)

A Recent Back-And-Forth
Recent exchange (not a transcript, but roughly what happened)

Bandai: Here's a press release with a few images attached

Gia: Thanks! We've decided to post it. Congrats!

Bandai: Could you fix your post and put some copyright text in it saying that the thumbnail you used is copyrighted?

Adam: Are you serious? Adding legal text to a small post with such a low-res/crappy thumbnail? We've never heard of that before, we'll just delete the image altogether.

Bandai: It's a legal requirement, etc., etc. you should respect copyrights, etc.

Adam: Actually thumbnails are considered fair use online (see Google Image Search). Whatever, though, we'll just not post images with Bandai news anymore.

I understand legal departments put these requirements together, but this struck me the wrong way:

Here are my assumptions:
* It's annoying and adds no value to read legalese if you're reading a news post (TM, Copyright, etc.)

* The goal of the company is to promote their real assets, not thumbnailed pictures of their assets. What the heck could someone do with a thumbnail, anyway?

* Getting posted is a privilege. If a company wants us to post about something going on with them, they should give us the freedom to post in the way we see best for our audience, which is namely not littering the post with legal text

Did I make the right decision in removing the image altogether and not putting legalese and starting a small bickering match or should I have just let it go and put in the legal text?

Ultimately, I want to preserve the informal tone of our main page and I don't like setting precedents.

I downloaded Mario 3 for the Wii today

It made me warm and fuzzy

I also decided to purchase Tsubasa Volume 4 for the sole reason that it quotes theOtaku.com on the back cover (I don't know anything about the series)

Note to companies: If you put our domain on it, I will buy ---anything---

Your Superstitions?
Do you do anything out of the ordinary because of superstition?

The only superstition I have is that I don't trust anything related to the city of Chicago. I don't think I've ever had a positive experience related there; from 6-hour airplane delays, to meeting some awful people there, etc. Ironically, I've never been outside their airport.

I went to the big bookstore opening with a Del Rey panel today

The Del Rey folks were awesome nice and the panel rocked

My camera ran out of power beforehand but I asked a girl next to me to take pictures and email them to me...wonder if she will

I'll post a report on the main page soon

Peter, from NYAF, told me that attendance to the convention is tracking well. That means we have to prepare for the possibility that 250 people will come (I need to follow up with Ramen to make sure she's properly preparing)

Aside from that, I had a few big/rough ideas. Nothing we can launch with for Version Vibrant, but stuff that I want to work on a month or two after
