~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thirteen days have passed since Imaku, Suki and Kaji arrived in Giran and life has returned to almost normal. Suki has moved in with Okena and has had some new clothes made for her. She is always either locked in her room or at Okena’s or Imaku’s side. Okena, thought at least three years older than the other three, has become fast friends with them and they spend much of their time together as a group. Kaji, who has moved in with Imaku, is truly fascinated with Giranian technology. Although they lack modern weapons, Giranians have an incredible mastery of electronics and communications and they are even able to pirate television signals from earth. Most of the inhabitants have become accustomed to the presence of humans, though Imaku and Suki bear a distinct hatred of the Yamamaru clan. Okena has been giving them lessons on the customs and etiquette of the three clans as well as the laws of the Alliance. At the moment, all four are in Imaku’s room eating lunch and talking about earth. Imaku is laying flat on his back and staring a the ceiling and only chiming in every now and then
“Wait, so in your world cats are kept as pets?!” Okena asks, sounding shocked.
“Yeah, but they aren’t like the Mizumarus,” explains Suki. “They’re small, have four legs, and don’t speak,” she adds. Okena simply shakes her head as she munches down another French fry. These have been her favorite food ever since Suki taught the chefs how to make them. Suki is often called down to the mess hall to teach them or give advice about earth food, and Okena often follows her in order to get free samples.
“When this is over, we really need to take you down to earth and show you around more,” says Kaji from behind the TV. He is still trying to figure out how they work, but right now he is simply plugging in a videogame console. It has a fighting game similar to “Tekken” or “Soul Caliber” in it. Kaji tosses the controller to Imaku, but Okena intercepts it.
“Let me play! I bet I can take you!” she says with a cocky smile.
“Oh geez…” mumbles Imaku quietly, still staring at the ceiling.
“Alright, but your in my world now! Ninja skills don’t apply,” Kaji says smoothly. They select their characters and the battle starts. Within seconds, it’s over. Okena stare blankly at the screen as she lets the controller fall from her hands. Imaku sits up and snatches it from between her feet, starting another battle without a word. The two are evenly matched and the battle just keeps on going. Okena watches in amazement as they concentrate on the screen and move their thumbs in a blur of motion, setting up spectacular combos and finishing moves. Suki taps her on the shoulder before she is completely lost.
“These two knuckle heads will be at it for hours; lets just go back to our room till they’re done,” she says.
“How do they do that?” Okena asks, standing up. She can’t tear her eyes away from the screen. Suki leads her out of the room by the arm and into the hall.
“Incredible…” Okena says, still awestruck by Imaku and Kaji’s videogame prowess. “How do they do it?”
“Don’t even try to understand them. Guys don’t think,” Suki says, misunderstanding the question.
“They are so good at that because they’re idiots?” Okena asks, sounding a bit confused.
“Yeah, but they’re my idiots,” Suki replies with a sigh and a smile. She starts off down the hall and Okena follows.
The days carry on like this and Imaku begins to grow restless. He has nothing productive to do and it’s beginning to take its toll on him. He has taken to wandering the halls alone and thinking about nothing in particular. It is on one such trip that he runs into Okena. At first he just walks by her, then changes his mind and turns around.
“Hey Okena, can I ask you something?” he says. “I haven’t done anything important since I got here and I’m getting bored. When is anything gonna happen?” he whines.
“Suki’s right, you really are a child,” Okena mumbles under her breath.
“Huh?” asks Imaku, who luckily didn’t quite hear her.
“Never mind. Well you’re in luck, m’lord. I have just received orders that you are to start private combat training with me at seven o’clock sharp tonight!” she says out loud. Imaku’s face brightens up.
“Now that sounds like fun!” he says excitedly. His tail starts wagging and he takes off down the hall, occasionally leaping onto the walls and taking a few steps before coming back down. A mischievous smile creeps onto Okena’s face
“Fun indeed,” she says quietly.
At the appointed time, Imaku shows up at the training hall in sweatpants and a grey tee-shirt. He looks inside and doesn’t see Okena, so he waits. About two minutes later, he spots Okena walking toward him and he waves. She nods, comes and unlocks the door, then turns to Imaku.
“Once we enter this room, I am no longer your friend, but your commanding military officer,” she says officially. Imaku nods and crosses the threshold.
“You’re late, maggot! Drop and give me twenty!” shouts Okena viciously.
“But I-” Imaku starts
“Butts are for crapping!” Okena cuts him off. “Twenty-five!”
“You just said-”
“Thirty!” Okena yells even louder. Imaku gets down on the ground and does thirty push-ups without breaking a sweat.
“I meant sit-ups, maggot!” Okena shouts again. Imaku gets on the ground and does thirty sit-ups with ease, then stands back up.
“Good, we understand each other,” she says in a more normal voice. “Now see those pods over there?” she asks. Imaku nods, now a bit afraid to even speak.
“Those are simulator pods. Your body will feel the effects of every blow and wound. You will physically sustain no wounds or fatal impacts, but there will be bruises, soreness, and fatigue,” she explains, making Imaku look a little worried. “Get in! We’re going to see what you can really do,” Okena says. Imaku reluctantly climbs into the pod as does Okena. Their forms materialize in a forest clearing.
“Okena, I cant figh-” Imaku starts. Before he can finish, three needles thud into his chest and his body falls over onto the ground. Another Imaku materializes and he looks down at his own bleeding corpse. His eyes nearly pop out of his head and the looks back up at Okena.
“What the f-” three more needles hit his chest and his body falls over on top of his other one.
“This is going to be a long three hours,” sighs Okena casually as third Imaku appears. She draws three more needles
