In the world of Giran, a bolt of black lightening touches down. Four travelers are left in its wake.
“Damn, what a ride,” says Kaji in slurred speech. He falls backwards into a sitting position and resists the urge to vomit. Okena, with a looks of slight disgust on her face, looks down at Kaji.
“You humans are weak,” she says matter-of-factly. Kaji simply leers at her in response. The two of them look over at Imaku and Suki, who are still holding each other.
“I can understand why he wanted to bring his personal servant, but did Lord Kazemaru really need to bring along a harlot? There are plenty of women here that would be overjoyed to lay with a man of his status.” Okena says flatly. Kaji again simply glares at her.
“Ok, first off, Suki is no man’s whore, not even Imaku’s. It’s called love. They just don’t know it yet,” he says. “Secondly…I’M NO SERVANT!!” he adds loudly. Kaji’s outburst manages to snap Imaku and Suki out of it. They jump back from each other with a shout and turn around so as not to let the other see them blushing. Okena and Kaji look back and forth between them during the awkward silence that follows.
Imaku looks over at Okena, seemingly back to normal.
“So…where are we?” he asks. He looks around and sees pine trees similar to the ones in the forest he grew up in and a moon much like the one on earth, only bigger and in a waxing crescent . He doesn’t recognize any of the smells and sounds or even the stars; even the air and soil feel strange.
“The energy is different here. It’s freer, but also much more turbulent,” Suki chimes in. Kaji and Okena both look at her like she is crazy.
“What?!” she says with a shrug. “My ancestors were priestesses.”
“We are in Giran, the crossroads of worlds,” announces Okena, turning back to Imaku.
“Nice introduction, Miss Videogame,” says Kaji with a sarcastic smirk.
“Actually, I prefer training to games,” replies Okena, obviously not getting the joke.
“Shoulda seen that coming,” mutters Kaji, rolling his eyes with a sigh.
Suddenly an iron throwing star flies out of the bushes, skimming the top of Kaji’s hair and making him fall off balance. Okena springs into action and tosses Imaku the Tamasii sword.
“Here, hold this,” she says arrogantly, tossing the sword at Imaku and smiling for the first time since she picked the other three up. As Imaku boggles it in his hands, she reaches into a holster wrapped around her thigh and grabs three throwing needles between her fingers. In one fluid motion she leaps into the air and does a cartwheel, letting fly the three needles and grabbing six more before landing. There is a groan of pain as a body clad all in black falls out of the bush, bleeding slowly onto the ground. Okena gives a small smile of grim satisfaction.
“One down, now where are your buddies hiding?” she says quietly, scanning the trees for the other two assassins. Suddenly another one leaps from a nearby tree toward Suki and Kaji, knife held point down. Imaku spots him and his eyes flash a brilliant shining blue and he appears in front of them in a flash, sword help up in a defensive position across both hands. The assassin’s eyes widen and he changes his trajectory, spinning toward Imaku in hopes of catching him off guard. Imaku ducks to avoid catching the dagger in his neck and springs back up, running the assassin through the ribs with his eyes shut tight. He hears the assassin’s last sounds and feels the warm blood dripping onto his hands. He pulls the blade out and falls backward, ears back and tail between his legs. His eyes widen in horror at the realization of what he has just done and he crawls back from the still bleeding corpse, but he can’t take his eyes off it. His heart is pounding uncontrollably and his breathing is becoming erratic. His field of vision narrows and his mind goes totally blank. All he can hear is his own breathing and furiously beating heart. Then a third assassin shoots out from the bush and charges toward Imaku. Imaku feels his footsteps through the earth and whirls around, swinging the blade with an animalistic yell. Under his mask the assassin smiles, thinking that his target is totally disoriented. Imaku swings his sword wildly three more times as his pupils dilate. Suddenly the assassin’s hidden smile turns to a grimace as he feels the bottom half of his body fall away from him. Three more cuts sever what’s left of his body as he falls to the ground, never knowing just what happened. Imaku looks at the assassin’s pieces and the organs and blood spilt all around them. His pupils shrink again, nearly disappearing and the light dims in his eyes. He falls slumps over onto the ground and looses consciousness. Suki rushes to his side and crouches down next to him, nearly in tears again.
“Imaku!” she shouts, shaking him. “Are you alright? Imaku! Wake up! Please!” She sits back and begins to sob again.
“He’s fine. Look carefully, do you see any wounds?” says Okena
“But-but…all this blood!” Suki stammers, looking up at her.
“Isn’t his.” Okena replies, placing a hand on Suki’s shoulder. “He’s never fought before, has he?” she adds.
“No,” Kaji answers. “Not even with his fists.”
“Incredible,” Okena thinks to herself. “Who is this kid? Using the Tamasii Kaze without any prior training, and four times! He must truly be Kurai’s boy.”
