“What the hell are you talking about?!” shouts Suki. “If we both shared the same experience, doesn’t that mean it really happened?!”
“It couldn’t have. We weren’t in your room in the dream,” says Imaku, still brooding over it all.
“But we did! I felt it and heard it and everything! And I felt the difference when I woke up too!” insists Suki.
“This has happened before,” says Imaku, mostly to himself. “With the black lightening.”
“ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING?!” screams Suki, now on the verge of panic.
“Suki, you have to calm down. Something weird is going on here. We slept in separate rooms, there’s no way we could have done anything with each other,” says Imaku calmly.
“Yes we did!” yells Suki hysterically. “We did and it was wonderful and then you said-” she starts spinning out of control. Imaku is trying to stay calm and having a hard time of it. He can’t focus with Suki’s incoherent raving. His mind is darting back and forth between a multitude of possibilities.
“Suki, please stop!” he says desperately. “Hysterics won’t help us figure this out!”
But Suki won’t listen. She just keeps rambling about bed and moonlight and Imaku, and Imaku can’t get her to stop. He looks desperately for help but sees no one. Suddenly, one idea stands apart from the rest. Placing his hands on her shoulders, he leans closer to her.
“Please work!” he prays silently. He closes his eyes and places his lips over hers. Suki’s eyes slowly close and her body goes limp. Imaku catches her unconscious form in his arms.
“Hey guys!” calls Kaji, leaning around the corner. “You have to see this news break! It’s- Oh my god, what happened?!”
“Suki…uh…she fainted,” Imaku says. He doesn’t want to get Kaji involved if he doesn’t have too.
“Ok, well, just bring her inside. You have got to see this!” Kaji replies, disappearing around the corner. Imaku carries Suki inside and sets her gently on the couch. He then sits down on the floor and Kaji sits on a chair behind him and presses play on the paused Tivo.
“A strange phenomenon occurred today at Grand Central Station about twenty minutes ago. Witnesses say they say a bolt of black lightening shot out of the sky and hit in the center of a strange glowing circle. This has paranormal believers-” Kaji pauses it again.
“Pretty cool, huh?” Kaji asks as if expecting praise.
“Kaji, you have loaded guns, right?” Imaku asks without turning around.
“Yeah, but-” Kaji starts
“Go get them.” Imaku interrupts still facing the television.
“What for?” asks Kaji, who is now getting rather nervous. He has never seen Imaku behave this way before.
“Just go!” Shouts Imaku, whirling around with is eyes glowing. Kaji is a bit afraid of Imaku now. “He’s never been this intense before,” he thinks as he scrambles to get his father’s revolver from the gun cabinet. Imaku stands up. His heart is pounding in his chest and his tail, like the hair on the back of his neck, is bristling.
Kaji comes racing back with a 1985 Winchester eight-round revolver.
“Ok, I got the gun! Now tell me what the hell is going on!” he shouts.
“Shut up,” Imaku hisses. “Someone’s here.” Sure enough, there is a knock at the door. Imaku reaches out to the door handle and slowly opens the door. Then he jumps back, ready for a fight.
“Lord Kazemaru, this belongs to you,” says the woman at the door. She is dressed in a form fitting leather cat-suit and kneeling on one knee with her head bowed. She is also holding a partially unsheathed Japanese-style sword with a blue blade out as an offering.
“Who are you?” asks Imaku, who’s guard is still up. He seems interested in her cat’s ears and tail, but doesn’t ask about them.
“I am Okena Mizumaru of the Mizumaru clan,” the woman says. “I have been sent to deliver the Tamasii Sword to Lord Kazemaru and accompany him back to Giran.
“Oooooookay…” says Imaku, now thoroughly puzzled.
“I was told he was living in a human home in a world called Terra” Okena says. “I take it you are his son and servant?” she adds, standing up.
“HEY!” shouts Kaji angrily. “I just happen to be Imaku Kazemaru’s best personal friend!”
“Silence vassal!” shouts Imaku in mock anger.
“Not funny,” says Kaji indignantly. He folds his arms and turns around and Imaku laughs a little. He then turns to Okena.
“I’m Imaku Kazemaru and the only Kazemaru living in this house,” he says. “I’m guessing you were expecting some great and noble lord or something, right?” he adds after seeing the expression on her face.
“Yes, as a matter of fact, I was,” she replies rudely. “I suppose I can skip the formalities and get right to the point. I was sent to deliver the Tamasii Sword and escort you back to Giran,” she says, tossing Imaku the sword. “Simple enough, now let’s go.”
“Hold on, I can’t leave without my best friend Kaji!” Imaku argues. Kaji give him a look of gratitude.
“Fine, your servant boy can come along as well if you wish,” Okena says turning around with a dismissing wave. Kaji’s expression turns sour.
“You two give me a sec to say god bye to Suki, okay?” asks Imaku sounding sad. Kaji ushers Okena out of the room and down to the street, where he glares at her menacingly as the sets up their transport pad. Imaku approaches Suki on the couch just watches her sleeping there for a moment.
“Goodbye Suki. Sorry I gotta leave now of all times, but my world needs me back now,” he says as he gently brushes back the hair from her face. “I’ll miss you so much,” he says, tears welling in his eyes. He bends down and places one more kiss on her lips then turns to go. Outside, Okena has laid out a weird cloth with a circular design on it. She and Kaji are already standing in the center of it. Kaji is eyeing her suspiciously; he already doesn’t like her. Imaku walks out of he building with his head hung low. Okena’s sharp eyes catch the glimmer of tears falling on the pavement, and she, though normally emotionless, feels a pang of pity for her fledgling lord. Imaku dries his eyes and looks up to greet Kaji with a smile.
He steps into the center of the circle and Okena whispers a spell. She then places her hands on the outside of the circle and it begins to light up. Imaku realizes what is happening and tries to fight down the panic of his past. All his willpower is focused on staying put. His thoughts are soon broken, however, by a shout.
“IMAKU!!” Suki calls, running out of the building, her eyes streaming.
“Suki?!” shouts Imaku in surprise. He looks down and sees that the circle is nearly complete. Suki has nearly reaches them, but he doesn’t think she’ll make it in time. He reaches out to her and she grabs his hand. Imaku pulls her into the circle and takes her in his arms, holding her tightly. He’ll never let her go again.
“Suki…” he whispers, fighting back tears.
“Imaku!” she says with a sob.
The black lightening strikes and suddenly all four are gone.
