   ^^ My first artical thingy.
Only I Can Kill Mountain. A study of the game Shadow of the Colossus.

----------------------

How It All Got Started:

Ok. So, not everyone I know has Played SotC (Shadow of the Colossus). But I have went totally crazy for this awesome game. In this game, you play the nameless character, who’s named Wander in the Japanese version of the game. (In the English adaptation of the game they didn’t name many of the characters.) It starts out with wander, riding on his horse, Agro. He rides through various landscapes until he crosses a bridge and a gigantic door opens, reveling a dark passage. After more horse riding, Agro comes to a stop, and Wander jumps off Agro. He picks up a person bundled up in a blanket and lays the person down on an alter. He throws the blanket off and there lies the girl you will come to know of as Mono.

Where Art Thou, Dictionary Of The Roman Language?

Now, this game isn’t set in the modern times. You can tell because when the main character first opens his mouth, gibberish comes out. It’s supposedly the Old Roman language. Because the subtitles say “thy” and “thou art”. But to me, the whole thing is gibberish. So without the holy subtitles, I’d have thrown the thing out the window. Anyways, don’t get too familiar with the talking in this game. Cause the only thing you will hear when it comes to talking is when the creepy voice out of the sky, formally known as Dormin, will tell you where the next Colossi is at, and when your main character calls for his horse. Also, there’s the ending cut scenes which have talking in them.

Colossi, Literally A Mountain That Can Kill You With Ease:

Now, believe me when I say, they named the game right. When you go to find the first colossi, (and getting to ‘em is not an easy task), you have to climb up a bunch of things. When you finally reach the top of the cliff that it’s on, a cut scene takes place. It makes you feel like a little cockroach. You’re 5’5” (or somewhere around that) and trying to fight a thing that’s standing on two feet and is about 33’9”. It also makes you feel like a little flea when you have to crawl around on their hairy back as it’s trying vigorously to shake you off. I ended up screaming many, many cuss words at the game as I was trying to defeat the colossi one by one.

Beauty While Taking Down Mountains:

Now, onto the beautiful parts of the game. The music and the scenery. The music is an aspect that adds greatly to the beauty of the game. Each colossi has about three themes each. One that plays as you are approaching the colossi, one while you’re fighting it, and one when you kill it. So in the game there are about 51 musical scores . Believe me when I say that the music is very beautiful and isn’t a run-of-the-mill type thing. Now, onto the scenery. I have NEVER played a game where 70% of all you did was venture around countless areas, trying to find 16 colossi. But whoever said that was a bad thing? The scenery is so beautiful, I can’t even find a word to describe it. The land you have stumbled upon is called “The Forbidden Land”. Reason is, nothing lives there. So get use to you and your horse being the only things that are alive here. Anyways, the land is a very majestic place. In some places it is pitch black and you can’t see where you’re going. In other places there’s so much light that it blinds you. The producer of the game said “The land is supposed to resemble the main character’s feelings of being alone and losing everything.” I can believe it. Being in the land can make you depressed at times and other times it can inspire you.
