~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Come with me, then. I can protect your eyes and guide you home,” the voice was familiar.
“Klarton,” I told the night, “What are you talking about?”
“I know all about you, my dear,” he called from below me.
“I am no one’s ‘dear’ and I warned you before,” I glared down at him. The butterfly glided down and rested on his shoulder, to which he didn’t even look at it.
“You know as well as I that you won’t be able to get home without help,” he insisted, not even a trace of a smirk on his face, “You won’t be able to see.”
“I still won’t go with you. I would be vulnerable and I don’t know you. Also, how the hell did you know about that?” I was getting a little ticked that he was acting all calm and cool while I was debating with myself about going with this man that I had just met today—and had tried to take me from the school in our first encounter. Not only was he mysterious, but he made me curious about all the things he was talking about. It was almost as if he knew—actually knew everything, and was willing to tell me…for a price. Always for a price.
“What’s in it to you, anyway?” I asked. A smile lit his face before he answered, making him look more handsome in the waxing moon than earlier that day.
“Your trust,” he replied honestly. “The only thing I ask for is that you trust me.”
“That will take time, Klarton,” I told him, “My trust doesn’t just happen in a day—or night in our situation.”
“But if I were to help you tonight, wouldn’t you trust me just a little more than you did earlier?” He haggled, “The seed of faith would be planted.”
“Which would die,” I snapped before changing the subject, “Did you know that you have a butterfly on your shoulder?”
He gave it a glance before lifting his hand to let it hop on—which it did—“Yes, I knew, since she’s mine.”
I almost fell out of the tree with that one, “Yours?”
“She is my pet,” He explained, looking so serious, I believed him, “Since some people believe that butterflies are keepers of the soul, she is also my keeper.”
“I can’t believe it,” I insisted, “I really can’t believe this bullshit, and you can’t honestly hope that I would.”
“But it’s all true,” he equally insisted. “If you want to hear more, I can tell you when I’m walking you home.”
A thought occurred to me, “Do you know if my brother is looking?”
“Of course, since he is your brother,” he made it sound like that was a bad thing or something dirty or untrue. “But I found you first.”
Klarton gave me his largest grins as he lifted the butterfly on his hand until it took flight. It gently glided onto my nose, and suddenly my eyelids got heavy.
“Wha…what’s happening?” I slurred my words like a heavy drunk, “Wha…what did ya…you do?”
“I’m taking you home, of course,” he told me as my eyes shut and I felt myself fall…
