Now Playing #51

Game: F-Zero
Track: Mute City
Time: 2:01
Size: 31.5 KB

Out of all the remixes I've heard of this song, both official and fan-made, I've never found one I liked more than the original SNES version. The F-Zero GX remix is good, but still, it just gets old after a few times of it looping. The SSBM remix...too high pitched on the guitar, and I don't like the way the beginning of the song is done, either. And the version on the F-Zero X Guitar Arrangement sound track is decent, though I prefer the F-Zero GX version over it. But I prefer the Big Blue theme over Mute City anyway, so whatever, heh.

The Afternoon Coffee Break

Yeah, that's basically what this is -- a coffee break. If I write a myOtaku post while drinking my oversized mug of coffee, it'll last longer.

Right, so I've got my every day chores of emptying the dishwasher and taking out the trash. And then an alternating weekends, I also have to clean up the dog crap, mow the lawns, and do the weed whacking out back. That's normally. But about 2:00 PM today, my mom walks in to my room and tells me she wants me to clean out the interior of our minivan (though thankfully, no vacuuming) as well as wash the outside. Why they can't just go through the car wash at a gas station to clean the outside before they leave on their vacation tomorrow I don't know, but hey, at least I'll get paid for it. Yes, I'll be getting a whole extra $5. I can't wait.

Oh, and I also just realized I have to find a new midi for next week's Now Playing. I really should start lining up a few at a time again, getting them ready beforehand, like I was for a while. Gives me more time to look for better midis when I don't already have something specific in mind, as well as removing the annoyance of having to do it Sunday afternoon when I'd rather be doing other things.

So anyway, I've already taken care of the dog crap as well as the trash for today, so that leaves.... Most of it left. The car cleaning will come next, as that can't be put off to tomorrow, while the mowing and weeding can be if needed. I really dislike any cleaning that involves liquids, though; the interior cleaning I don't mind, but having to wash the outside is just a pain. In fact, almost all liquids not necessary for the perpetuation of life suck. It's just an overall crappy state of matter, if you ask me.

And that concludes this coffee break's ramble.

Fanatics find their heaven in never ending storming winds

No, the title doesn't have anything to do with the post. I just love that line from Key of the Twilight, which I'm listening to right now.

I've been busy today. I got up at 7:30 AM, made some coffee and instant ramen, played Animal Crossing from about 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM, and then watched episodes 21 through 26 of Chobits until about 4:00 PM. And I still haven't gotten dressed, heh.

Medli was busy in Animal Crossing this morning. I decided what I'm going to use her house for, and then picked a ton of fruit and did a lot of fishing in order to pay off the final first floor expansion so that I could get a basement and start going through with my plan. Now, the museum is all well and good, but I thought it would be cool to have my own display of fish and insects. So I decided to try to catch every fish and insect with Medli, and display the insects on her first floor with the fish in the basement and the second floor (which I shall get after I pay off my soon-to-be-installed basement) as her "living area."

It actually took me a bit to figure out an arrangement that would let me properly display all 40 fish/insects on a single 8x8 floor, but I think I came up with something suitable. All around the edges of the room, except for the four middle squares in front of the doorway, will be lined with tables, which will have insect/fish containers on them. Then, in front of those will be more containers just sitting on the ground so that you'll be able to easily see both rows. In front of these will be empty spaces for walking through, and in the middle will be two columns of four containers which I haven't decided about being on tables or not yet. I think I'll have to just try out different configurations for the middle to see what looks best.

About Chobits, I really enjoyed the series, and after watching the whole thing I think Kotoko is my favorite character. Even though she's only in the later episodes, I like her personality and her reactions to being around Sumomo. Great fun to watch. (And now I'm thinking about how awesome it would be to have one of those things and have it look like Malon from Ocarina of Time, heh.)

The ending was basically what I expected, though it did throw in that one twist that had me doubting if things actually would end up like I was thinking. And unlike most of the other anime series I've watched, the ending didn't leave me going, "What, that's it? But what about...?" It actually wrapped up the series nicely and didn't leave a bunch of stuff unexplained, which is one thing that has really annoyed me about some other series. So, I'm quite happy with how the story ended.

And now that I'm finished with Chobits, I shall start work again on that update for It's All About the Rupees. I'm halfway done, so only seven more articles to rewrite. Then again, I'm halfway done with the HTML FAQ, and I haven't updated that in weeks.... And I need to do some testing for a generic table code for the next two sections of the FAQ before I can even start writing. Bleh.

Who's that hot girl next door?

I started a new character in Kakariko, my Animal Crossing village, yesterday. Her name is Medli, she's got light brown eyes and brown hair -- pretty close to the actual Medli from The Wind Waker -- and I even designed a pattern for her of the little crest that Medli from TWW has on her dress. I think she's the cutest female character in AC that I've seen, heh.

So today I got up at about 7:00 AM and went out to catch insects and fish for the ones that only come out in the morning, and with all the money I made from selling everything I caught (since the fish/insects section of the meseum has already been filled by Desbreko), I was able to pay off my second house payment right away. So now I've got most of the fish and insects for July, and I'm awaiting the final first floor expansion tomorrow, as well as a roof repainting. I've been experimenting with roof colors, to see which goes best with the crest I put on the door, and this time I decided to try brown. I figure I'll probably end up going with that, or possibly red if I don't like brown.

I still need to catch two more insects with Desbreko, though; a grasshopper and a spider, though spiders technically aren't insects. Of course, frogs aren't fish, either, so what are ya gonna do? I've got till the end of September to catch them, otherwise I'll have to wait another year, so hopefully I won't forget (again).

If I can just catch these last two, I'll have a complete set of Golden Tools for Desbreko. The grasshopper probably won't be that hard to find, once they come out in August, but it's been a real pain finding a spider. I don't think they can be found in fruit trees, even after the fruit has been shaken down, so I'm left with only a few other trees in town to try and get one from.

Bits of Cho

Yep, time for another anime binge. I really have no idea why I don't watch any anime at all for a couple months and then, all of a sudden, watch a whole serious in a couple days, I just sort of...do. It's an odd habit.

So right now I'm up to episode 9 of Chobits, having taken a break after watching episode 8 to make some coffee. I'm liking the series quite a bit so far; it reminds me somewhat of Oh My Goddess!, which I also liked. Actually, now that I think about it, it seems almost like a mixture of Oh My Goddess! and Love Hina in some regards. Funky.

And I absolutely adore Chii's hair -- it's just awesome and oh-so-cute. (Yes, I have a thing for girls' hair. ^_^) Now I want a wall scroll of Chii, heh. I've got some empty wall space after taking down some old N64 posters and it's so tempting to get one. If only they didn't cost so much.... Having to save money sucks.

Now Playing #50

Game: Mega Man 2
Track: Wood Man
Time: 1:20
Size: 26.2 KB

So what am I doing for the 50th Now Playing midi? The exact same thing as for all of the previous 49. Ha ha.

But anyway, this was one of those times where I didn't have anything planned in advance (I usually look around for a good midi a couple days before Sunday), so I just looked through my video game music collection for something. And lo and behold, I had some Mega Man 2 midis that I actually listen to decently often, so I picked my favorite one and tossed it up. Though seeing as I've never actually played Mega Man 2 (I was never much of a fan of the series), I can't really make any comments on the game -- I just enjoy that old NES music, heh.

Desbreko Statistics

So a bit ago I got the idea for this little table for displaying what game I'm currently playing and what music I'm listening to, as I've seen on various other blog-type sites, in the style of the statistics table in the myOtaku.com backroom. (Most of the HTML is pretty much the same, in fact). The whole thing sort of came up on a whim and I just stuck it in my intro to see how it would look, so I don't know if I'm actually going to keep it, but I figured I'd at least see what other people thought about it. Like? Dislike? Neat? Stupid? Just don't care?

Edit:
Right, so I finally got everything with my intro finished.... Assuming I don't wake up in the morning and totally hate what I've done, heh. So yeah, what's up there now is the final result of my meddling, as long as I don't find something that needs tweaking later.

And just as a little sidenote, I've now got all four pieces of Purple Link art from Zelda: Four Swords Adventures on my page. Isn't Purple Link awesome?

You got 1,000 Force Gems! It's good to be alive!

Ah, the joys of having the location of every Big Key in Zelda: Four Swords Adventures memorized, so that you can snatch up the contents of Big Chests before your friends even know what's happening. Ain't it grand?

So anyway, I called up a friend at about 9:30 AM and asked if he was free. He was, so he came over around noon and we ended up playing Zelda: Four Swords Adventures and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles for about six hours. (It's handy that between us we own both worthwhile connectivity-focused games as well as three GBAs and cables). It was a lot of fun; we completed levels 5 and 6 in FSA, and in FFCC we beat one new dungeon, as well as the first dungeon on the third cycle (my brother was playing with us on a new character, so the later levels tended to kill him rather fast).

About Four Swords Adventures. . . . It's a wonderful single player game, but it's really just an absolute joy whenever I get to play it in multiplayer mode. Even with only two people, the simple fact that there's some real cooperation/competition going on adds a lot of fun to the game. I cannot wait until I get to play the game in three or four player mode. Another friend, upon seeing my FSA shirt at church this evening, said he wanted to get together with me and the friend I had over so he could play multiplayer mode, so hopefully that will happen soon.

And about Chrystal Chronicles. . . . I've heard a lot of people complain about this game, but really, I find it to be plenty of fun. Maybe it's just because I've only ever played the game in multiplayer mode, and having enough GBAs was never an issue, but I really don't see all that much wrong with the game. Yeah, there are things that could've been done better, but that's true of any game. I enjoy FFCC for what it is -- I don't dislike it for what it isn't.

I mainly find the combat to be a lot of fun. Most of the time, if you just run up and start hacking away, you'll die pretty quickly. But if you're good, you can actually anticipate enemies' attacks and dodge out of the way, or you can have someone sitting back casting spells to help keep the fighter types from taking as much damage, such as when me and my friend were fighting up front with a group of enemies and my brother was sitting back and freezing them with ice spells. (Which brings up another point: I really love the magic system in FFCC, as it fits in perfectly with the real time combat). There's really quite a good amount of depth to what you can do with what at first appears to be simple hack and slash gameplay, if you care to delve into it and use teamwork.

So while I haven't gotten to play FFCC an incredible amount, not owning the game myself, every time I have played it, it's been a lot of fun. It seems kind of odd to say an FF game is underrated, but I think FFCC is somewhat underrated. If you've got some friends and some GBAs, I think it's one of the best multiplayer games on the GCN. Or at least it's one of my favorites, at any rate.

Oh, and just a quick note: It's All About the Rupees has been moved to http://www.wrappedinplastic.net/rupees/ so be sure and update your bookmarks (if anyone out there has bothered to bookmark my site).

All of the Above

The ironic thing is that the title is at the top of the post. . . .

You know what I did today? I worked my butt off. And that's something I rarely do, because it's hard to put back on, you know? . . . Yeah. But anyway, both the front and back lawns needed mowing, so I did that. And in the very back of the back yard, around the raised flower beds, some of the weeds had grown as tall as I am, so that also had to be taken care of. It was a real bugger, clearing out all that grass.

First off, our weed whacker wasn't quite up to the task. I'd put it down at the base of a big patch of grass, move it in to try and cut it down . . . and it would jam. There were that many weeds. So I had to make several passes over each area, cutting off the tallest blades and then working my way down a couple inches at a time. That wouldn't have been so bad, except it got to the point where there was so much cut grass on top of what still needed to be cut, that it would jam the weed whacker. So I had to go and get a garden rake, and remove the cut blades of grass every now and then.

All in all, everything ended up taking about two and a half hours. All the while, it was about 90 degrees out, and most of the time I was in direct sunlight. So why did I do it? Cash -- it can make people do a lot of things they wouldn't otherwise do. Am I crazy? Yeah, probably. Am I still all sweaty and smelling of dirt and grass? No, I took a shower afterward, so don't worry about that.

After all that was done, though, I played still more Zelda: Four Swords Adventures. In fact, I beat the game for the third time just a little while ago. I don't think I'll be going for a fourth time, though. . . . Well, except for playing through in multiplayer mode with a friend. That'll make four, but I don't think I'll be playing the game in single player mode for a while. The first time, it was an absolute blast; the second time, it was still a lot of fun because I hadn't played in single player mode much before that; the third time, it was pretty fun, but I was glad to finish it up today. I think if I tried playing through in single player mode again, I'd stop part way through and not have the motivation to continue.

As for web site news, I've started rewriting my Zelda: A Link to the Past boss strategies to put up on It's All About the Rupees. And when I say "rewriting," what I really mean is "starting again from scratch." The old ones give good info -- almost as good as the new ones will have, since I haven't come up with too many new tricks since writing the old ones -- but they're horribly written compared to what I can do now. Looking back at any of my early writings really puts into focus how much I've improved over the years.

I'm not sure when they'll be finished, but hopefully it won't take me longer than a week or so to get them done. I remember I wrote all the old ones in a single day, so I know I can do it in as short a time as I want . . . I just have to actually want to do it, heh. And in addition to those, I'm going to be doing some editing on a few other old articles. I don't really want to put up an A Link to the Past strategy page and have nothing on it but the boss strategies.

I also want to do a review of Four Swords Adventures, if I can ever get some people together for a few games of Shadow Battle. I know pretty much all there is to know about Hyrulean Adventure, but I've barely gotten to play Shadow Battle, so I still need to get more experience with it before I write a review. Maybe people will be free this Friday. . . .

Now Playing #49

Game: Super Mario Kart
Track: Title Theme
Time: 0:57
Size: 17.3 KB

Whenever I hear any of Super Mario Kart's music, a host of fond memories from playing the game come flooding up to the front of my mind. Besides a few rounds of Duck Hunt when I was really little, Super Mario Kart was the first video game that I ever played, and dang did I play it. I wouldn't be at all surprised if I ended up putting well over a hundred hours into it before ever even touching another game. I got good enough to where I could always get first place in every race of the 150cc Special Cup, and Rainbow Road was actually the easiest race in that cup for me. When I look back on it, that seems really amazing, considering I wasn't that great at video games when I first started out.

So yes, as you can imagine, the title theme of Super Mario Kart brings back a lot of great memories. Even now, as I sit here listening to the music, I can perfectly picture the title screen after not having seen it in years, with the various racers driving past.... Makes me want to get the game out and race a few cups.
