The Musical housekeeper
Historic Haunted America By: Michel Norman and Beth Scott

Sate: Alabama

It is diffecult to singel out one Alabama Masion as the most beautiful on the state, but Ganieswood, a few miles morth of Dempolis, has been termed a manificent example of Greek Revival arexhitecture in the state. It is also known for a musical ghost story.
Gen. Nathan Bryan Whitfield built the house between 1843 abd 1860 for his wife and chlderen. When his wife died before it was finshed, General Whitfiled hired a young woman from the east to care for the home and childern. She was and accomplished pianist, spending most evenings entertaning the family with her musical skills. In 1856, how ever the younge woman fell ill and died. Her last wish was to be buried in her home town.
Harsh winter weather delayes the shipment of her coffin to the east , and for some few days or weeks (the reacords are not clear) , the young woman's remains were kept under the cellar staircase.
She was finally buried accourding to her wishes, but not before visitors heard faint footfalls ascending the basement staurs and going into the the drawing room. Delightful piano tunes favored the by the deceased housekeeper would be heard throughtout the house.
Historiains argue over the woman's name or even over the wheather or not a piano as even in the original house. In 1976 a grand rosewood piano was givein to the hisitoric home by mrs. arthur camption , a descendent of General Whitfiled. There is some ecadence that the piano may have been among Gaineswood earlist furnishings.
The housekeep has apparently not returned to play her beloved piano, but she may one day. Visitors should stay alert for unplanned recitels.
