Free Music!
50 Foot Wave - "Free Music" EP

That's a link to an entirely free five song EP that anyone can download off of 50 Foot Wave's website. All that I ask is that if you end up liking it, then spread the word as much as possible. Put links on your website, in your signatures on message boards, etc. I'll be doing the same thing. 50 Foot Wave could use as many fans as possible, because they rock. Hopefully you guys will think so, too!

Reading Is Fundamental
I decided to post here right now, since I can't do anything with my site right now. Hopefully that will be fixed soon, but hey. I've got plenty of time to wait. :P

So here's the post...

Reading keeps me going. More specifically, reading outside of class keeps me going. Whenever I have to read a ton of pages for all of my classes at once (which is often), another little part of me dies inside. Most likely one of the parts with a tiny bit of optimism still wriggling around. Afterwards I just wise up, skim through the pages, take some notes, and hope for the best. Hasn't failed me so far! But, still, doing all of that reading for school, even when it's for a subject that interests me, is not very much fun at all. I'm pretty sure that I've mentioned it before several times (and I know other people have mentioned it before), but in high school that nonsense nearly killed my love of reading. It's true, it's true. I think that's what schools do. Instead of teaching kids that reading is a wonderful thing, they teach you that reading is a horrifying, boring tool that should be feared above all others. What the hell else are you supposed to think about most of the crap that you have to study there? Yes, sir, I'll read these facts about U.S. History (note: I actually enjoy history...), and regurgitate them to you when it is needed. Do I need to remember them afterwards to get a good grade in this class? No? Well then.

I think that Calvin and Hobbes put it best: "As you can see, I've memorized this utterly useless fact long enough to pass a test question. I now intend to forget it forever. You've taught me nothing except how to cynically manipulate the system. Congratulations." Sounds pretty accurate to me. (Side note: Thankfully there do exist teachers who made learning very fun for me, and I'll always be grateful for them. I do very much dislike the teachers that just toss a book at you and expect you to learn only from that, however. That's the way to get kids to learn!) I only remember a lot of that stuff, because my mind soaks up tons of random facts (it comes with being a big geek), but I forget shitloads of boring crap, too. I guess that in college you have the added incentive of learning stuff that will help you become proficient at a certain job, but let's be honest here - you know and I know that we'll likely forget a lot of what we learn in college unless we use the knowledge directly when we work. I don't think that I'll be recalling obscure Statistics equations any time soon.

Anyway, reading for pleasure has kept me from turning into a dull, droning zombie (right?). Recapturing my love of reading basically saved me during my senior year of high school (when I idiotically chose the absolute hardest schedule I could have taken... yes, I took it really easy), and it's keeping me afloat these days. I want to ask you guys something, though: How many of you have similar reading habits to me? Sometimes I'll go a really, really long time without reading anything at all, and then I'll read one novel and that'll snowball into me becoming an insanely voracious reader and going through tons of stuff in a relatively short time. I know that I can't be the only one who does that. Out with it already!

Right now I'm in the phase where I'm reading tons of stuff, and it is very fun. So far I've read through three of Haruki Murakami's novels... I mentioned Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World before, and I also read Norwegian Wood and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Don't know whether or not I could choose a favorite if asked, but I enjoyed all three of them. Yesterday at the library I checked out Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury*, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, and A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. I also put in requests for some of Philip K. Dick's novels... Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (the novel that Blade Runner is based on), A Scanner Darkly (which is getting a film of its own soon), and The Minority Report: And Other Classic Stories. Both libraries I go to have tons of other great novels that I'd like to get to eventually, as well... I swear, I haven't been this excited about reading in a long time lol. Great timing, too, since I only have a week left in the quarter, then finals, and then I'll be free~

So, yes. The basic message is that reading for school = the suck (most of the time, though admittedly there are exceptions), and that reading for pleasure = the own. So go, my children, read! Read until your eyes explode from within their sockets! If you refuse, well, you're just a little wuss then. Do you want to be a wuss? No? Then go curl up in front of a fireplace and read your heart out! If you don't have a fireplace (you wuss), then set something on fire and curl up in front of that. A couch will do nicely. Your horrible neighbors would also be acceptable if you need something to set ablaze in a pinch. Now get the hell out of here.

Also, Tony, I checked out Vol. 1 of The Walking Dead from the library, and it freaking owns. The ending was pretty damn crazy... I wish I had some spare money so that I could get the other two volumes. :(

*In between the time I first wrote this post and now, I finished reading Fahrenheit 451. I liked it. Was a bit weird going from Murakami to Bradbury, but I got used to it eventually lol.

Out of these 237 movies, I've seen 96 of them. A whopping 41%. I wouldn't touch a lot of these movies, though, unless it were to beat them to death with a nice club. A bunch of these movies I watched due to extreme boredom... you know, when you have absolutely nothing at all to do, you flip a channel, see movie, and you're like, "...eh, why not?" And then you realize later that you made a huge mistake, but it's too late. Damn movies.

Oh well. Nice time waster, I guess. For your sake, I hope you haven't seen more of these than I have. Unless they're all of the good movies.

EDIT: By the way - hail Satan! Hail hail!

EDIT 2: "America, Fuck Yeah" is hilarious.

Yay.
Episode III nonsense.

My update tomorrow will be the last time that I update this site. I figure that by now everyone who cares knows that I have a new site. And I figure that if they don't know, they'll check out this page when they see that I haven't updated in forever to see what happened. My plans rule like sodas.
