   The Final Fantasy VIII Part

"I'm...all alone again...," he said aloud, to the swirling darkness that had swallowed him so suddenly after his encounter with Matron and the younger him.

He had called out for his friends and none had answered. He ran around, not knowing where he was. Not knowing where he was going. And not knowing why he couldn't find his friends. Was he lost? Was he going to be trapped forever in time?

"I want to go to where Squall and I promised!" she chirped, running happily in the bright realm she was in. She ran past the others, a smile on her face. She laughed gleefully and waved at them.

But...slowly...her happiness died away. Her smile faded. Panic and fear began to settle in. Her features etched into worry.

He wasn't around. She couldn't hear his voice. She couldn't feel his presence next to her.

She reached up and held the rings hooked by her necklace. One of them was his favorite ring. She looked down sadly. In a small voice, she whispered, "Where are you...?"

He spun around wildly, eyes darting from place to place as her voice echoed softly away. He mimed her words: "Where are you...?!"

There was no answer. The silence hung like a heavy mist. And it hurt badly.

But he had hope now. He had heard her. He wasn't by himself because she was somewhere nearby. She had to be.

He started to move forward, not really following a path, just walking. His ice-blue eyes stared directly up ahead. He didn't dare look around at the emptiness.

There appeared to be no life. And there was an eerie silence. He could only hear the fierce whisper of the wind blowing, his own footsteps echoing hollowly, and the rattle of his belts every now and then as he gained speed in his pace.

He continued to trudge onwards, for what felt like ages.

And then his hope started to diminish, slowly and painfully...

Finally, he came to a stop, tired and in despair. And he could go no further - he had halted on a cliff.

Exhausted, he fell to all fours, sighing. Regaining his composure, he quietly got into a sitting position. He rested his right hand on his knee, looking broodingly at the abyss that stretched before him.

He began to tremble slightly. His breathing started to come in short, sharp gasps. He knew he was slipping into a state of shock. And he couldn't afford for such a thing to happen. His hand crawled up his chest and gripped his Griever Pendant steady, closing his eyes and trying to keep calm.

She was at the flower field where they had made the promise. The scene around her was breathtakingly beautiful. A gentle wind had picked up and toyed with her raven hair. And as she looked around, she didn't care about the enviroment she was in. She felt no joy. All she wanted was to be by his side. But he wasn't there...

Again, she held his ring. Again, she whispered. "...Squall...I want to be with you..."

He became desperate again when he heard that lovely voice tinged with sorrow.

"I want to be with you, too, Rinoa... I want to hold you in my arms..."

A single tear trickled down his ivory face. It was the first time in years since he felt like crying. He looked down, completely devastated. His chestnut bangs fell over his forehead, obscuring his face.

(...why me...?) The words went through his mind bitterly.

Looking up again, he saw a distant shape. Puzzled, he tilted his head to one side.

It was drifting lazily towards him, swaying to and fro. And it was white.

He stared. (...a feather?)

When the feather was a mere foot from his grasp, he extended his left hand out and watched it flutter to a stop on his palm.

And at that exact moment, a pillar of light shined down from the black heavens above.

He looked at it, eyes widening for a moment. Without thinking, he got up, rather groggily, and then ran. He held the feather tightly as he pressed forward, his pendant banging softly against his chest. He sprinted quickly, at a speed he never thought he'd run at.

Once he was a yard away from the mysterious and radiating light, he lunged...

And then he was falling. Falling through a blue sky. As he dared to glance downwards, he saw a field of flowers below him.

He didn't care that he may be falling to his death. Because he saw something. And his mind was set on that one thing: Rinoa.

He watched his angel as he continued his rapid descent. Any moment now, his whole body would come in contact with soft petals then the hard impact with the solid ground.
