Tired...but I've got something interesting that Ed fans might wanna read!!^__^
The Caduceus
The symbol that Edward wears on the back of his jacket and that Alphonse has emblazoned on his arm is that of a caduceus. A caduceus is defined as a herald's wand or staff, especially found in ancient times.

One of the more famous caducei is Herme's staff, which is winged, with two serpents twined around it. It is this staff, and variations of that are used to represent the various medicine fields.

All caducei with the double-snake representation find their roots in Herme's caduceus. However, all caducei with the single-snake representation come from Aesculapius.

Yet another god from the Greek Pantheon, Aesculapius was the god of medicine, and Zeus smote him for daring to bring the dead back to life.

The Rod of Aesculapius signifies rebirth, and Flamel's Cross (which is based loosely on the Rod of Aesculapius), symbolizes balance in all things.

The only characters in the show who wear this variant of Flamel's Cross are Edward, Alphone and Izumi, and all wear it as a mark of their sins. They broke the law of Equivalent Trade (balance), and are searching for ways to repent. Edward and Alphonse are trying to restore each other, and essentially are looking for rebirth.

The only remaining question, then, is will they find what they are searching for?
