Chapter Three – Visit –

“Ugh. Great. Just what I needed. Sasuke!”

“What?”

“You’re little ‘friends’ are here.”

“What?”

~~~~
Nii-san’s in a good mood today. I wonder why. Sasuke was sitting on a tall tree in the forest that surrounded their house. He rested his head on the hard trunk, his feet dangling at least eight to ten feet off the ground. He began to remember when they first started their lives away from Konoha. Itachi was in a good mood again that day. His usual calmness and impassiveness had long disappeared.
They both decided on staying close to the village, so that they could get the necessities of life easier. Itachi didn’t fancy farming or anything of that sort, so for a short while they just stole food from the grocery store. When Sasuke nearly got caught, they both just stole from their old Uchiha house. Once, they were caught, but it was only by Mikoto, who, in the end, didn’t move out. Sasuke was enraged about that fact, but Itachi somehow calmed him. Mikoto actually began letting them take their food, so that’s how they got that.
It was actually peaceful in that area. Itachi made sure that it was a place where shinobi will look over, but if they do see them, he would defeat them easily, probably sending them to madness with his Mangekyo Sharingan. Sasuke’s wish to earn the Mangekyo Sharingan faded when Itachi’s normal eyesight was slowly failing. It wasn’t that bad – he was nearly far sighted, but not completely. Sasuke always teased his Itachi about how he would look with glasses. Itachi would defend himself with the concept of contacts.
At one point, Sasuke got the chicken pox. He was complaining for a few days before Itachi actually found out that he was itching everywhere. When Itachi grew worried and checked what was wrong with his younger brother, he spotted the red spots. He nicked some cream for the pox off from the Konoha Pharmacy, and treated it for Sasuke.
When Sasuke turned eight, Itachi began training him. Sasuke turned out to be a very fast learner now that his sensei was practically his older brother. Itachi understood Sasuke’s weaknesses and strengths, like the younger Uchiha’s newly developed habit of tripping over nothing. Itachi would always catch him, though. Sasuke found himself apologizing when it wasn’t his fault or anyone’s fault. He was trying to overcome that habit, too.
There was this one point in time when Itachi became so completely bored that he used his excellent Genjutsu skill to sneak into the library to read. Sasuke found it amusing that Itachi was actually a reader, but Itachi didn’t mind. It was when the older Uchiha asked Sasuke to read this passage from a book when he started giving him lessons on not only shinobi skills, but also on other things, arithmetic, reading, writing, and all the other things. He only taught Sasuke twice a week, though. Sasuke didn’t find it boring, but interesting.
Soon, Sasuke wanted to learn how to play a musical instrument. Itachi knew how to play the piano, but Sasuke wanted to learn the peaceful, violin. Somehow they both scraped up the money to buy Sasuke one, but in the end the younger Uchiha was frustrated on how horrible he sounded, and gave up. It turned out that during Sasuke’s trial on self-teaching, Itachi grew interested in the instrument as well. But he didn’t begin to play it. He just took it apart and put it back together somehow.
Sasuke wasn’t the only one who got sick, because once Itachi kept passing out. Sasuke had no idea what to do, so he practically kidnapped a nurse from the Konoha Hospital, saying, “Help him or else!” whenever Sasuke said ‘or else’ he took his index finger on his right hand and ran it across his neck. The nurse was fully convinced that Sasuke would actually separate her head from her body, and she healed Itachi. When Itachi came to, he smacked her head so hard that she forgot everything that happened the week she was in the house.
Now, Sasuke knows how to move stealthily as he explored the village, sometimes he even was able to go to Ichiraku’s Ramen every once and a while. He never once had the courage to go talk to anyone because, first, Itachi generally won’t let him, and two, he was still his shy self. It was only when he saw those two typical Genin, one tied to a pole and one innocently eating lunch he began to try to talk to them.
The white haired man was a Jounin, by the looks of it. Itachi had told him about the three-man teams that customarily kept hold while you’re a Chuunin and a Genin, with the leader as a Jounin. But that particular Jounin that Sasuke just met was one of the ones that his older brother warned him about. The young now non-Uchiha was told that Kakashi (the white haired Jounin) was once an ANBU Nin as well, and the two ‘prodigies’ are hypothetically well acquainted with each other. Sasuke’s impulse to run though was activated when the white-haired man recognized him.
Sasuke wasn’t exactly frightened when the man identified him. He just knew that he had to go or else their hiding place would be found out. That was one thing Sasuke did not want to happen. Even though he barely made friends of his own, he was fond of the now powerful connection with his brother, and he planned to keep it strong. Living with a moody teenager was tough, but Itachi now often seen his good times. Sasuke found it confusing that Itachi seemed to have a completely different side to him whenever he talked to him. He was always gentle with his younger brother all of a sudden, but still he was his rough self to everyone else. Itachi isolated himself on all sides, only open to Sasuke. The young, pale boy found that bizarre, but comfortable.
It was so quiet. So peaceful. Sasuke had also discovered a new-found talent. He could sketch excellently, but mostly people. The boy was currently working on improving his landscape drawing, though he couldn’t bring himself to stop sitting on a rooftop and drawing people doing different actions in Konoha. Sasuke was lucky, because he wasn’t caught so far. He thought people would think it was peculiar to be taking sketching one’s movements without their permission, or even without them noticing it, but Sasuke was alright with that. At first he found it hard to sketch one’s single movement, but he learned from his older brother to focus on one thing at a time. Itachi also gave him an entirely different tip on landscape drawing – open your mind, don’t just focus on one thing at a time. Sasuke now appreciated not only how smart his brother was, but now his brother was wise, too. Could any kid like him wish for a better older brother?
Something was brought to Sasuke’s attention. A twig just snapped breaking the serene atmosphere of the forest. Sasuke sat up, picking up the kunai that he kept with him when he freed that Naruto kid. Speak of the devil…Sasuke thought, as spiky, blonde hair came into sight. Nii-san’s not going to like this! The young Uchiha added when not only pink, cherry-blossom hair could be seen, but also an odd shaped white hairstyle. It’s that Kakashi guy…
Sasuke had to get rid of them. All of them. Before they get to the house. Before they get to Itachi. Sasuke gulped, knowing that taking on a Jounin would be tough. The two other kids seemed pretty useless, but the Kakashi dude was going to be extra dangerous. It wasn’t long until he had to make a decision. They were too close to the house now…maybe if he can alert Itachi before they-
“Oi! It’s you!” Naruto’s loud voice again cut through the tranquil quiet of the forest.
“Damn,” Sasuke muttered, jumping away, out of sight. He hoped that only the idiot so him…or if he was lucky at all, the idiot might think that he was hallucinating. Sasuke reached the house, now panting.
“What’s wrong?” Itachi asked, opening the door. Sasuke shook his head, trying to say that someone was coming, but his heart was seriously pounding against his chest now. “Sasuke, what’s wrong?” Itachi’s stern voice reached him again. Sasuke felt his older brother help him back up.
“Someone is…coming,” was all that Sasuke managed to say. He wished to add that Kakashi was there, but he was too out of breath. Why was he breathless now? He was used to going from his tree back to the house. Maybe it’s excitement? No, that’s the wrong word… Fear?
Sasuke dragged himself up to his room, toppling on the bed, his legs feeling heavy as they rested on the soft blankets. For a moment, Sasuke thought that the ‘intruders’ would leave, not finding the right way to the house. It wasn’t long until the thought of being safe was shoved right out the window.
“Ugh. Great. Just what I needed. Sasuke!”
“What?”
“You’re little ‘friends’ are here.”
“What?”
Sasuke reluctantly sat up, his body still gasping for rest and air. He knew perfectly well what Itachi meant about little ‘friends. He could also tell by his tone that he wasn’t pleased at all about what Sasuke just did. “Man,” Sasuke groaned, running down the staircase only to clap eyes with his older brother. The younger one slightly gulped, seeing the annoyed look in his brother’s face. He was right. He wasn’t please at all. He seemed furious.
“Sasuke, I suppose they came here to talk to you,” Itachi said coolly, a lot calmer than expected. Itachi seemed to force himself to relax. He was about to walk past Sasuke until Kakashi’s voice broke the awkward silence.
“Itachi, long time no see,” Kakashi said. Sasuke could tell by his tone that he was choosing his words carefully.
“Yeah,” was all his older brother replied. “Shorter than I hoped it to be, though.” The younger raven-haired boy spied an annoyed look on Naruto’s face. Sakura was staring dreamily between the two brothers. “What do you want here, now?” Itachi’s voice cracked the stillness.
“We wanted to talk to our friend,” Naruto protested. Sasuke caught the blonde’s eyes, and he shook his head quickly, trying to indicate that he doesn’t want them here, go away before you make matters worse.
“Your friend. Last I checked Sasuke didn’t speak to anyone during his recent visit to Konoha,” Itachi now had his calm composure back, though he still had that tint of anger in his voice.
Sasuke glared at Naruto when he opened his mouth. He was almost certain that the boy that was tied to the post was going to say that he lied. That would be a total problem if he did say that. Sakura finally spoke up. “Well, we saw him at least. Kakashi-sensei here told us about you two. You both ran away for some reason.”
“And does that have anything to do with you?”
“Well we’re friends-” Sakura began. She was cut off by Sasuke’s glares.
Itachi turned and took a good look at the three of them. He sighed. “I have nothing to do with this.”
“And neither do I,” Kakashi seemed to hastily pipe up. Itachi’s gaze rested to the Jounin, his eyes practically boring into his.
“Then, I have to speak to you, Kakashi-san. It’s a deal that I wish to make,” Itachi softly told him. Kakashi nodded, looking a bit nervous. “You disrupted the usual tranquility of this forest, and you found us both. We do not wish to be found.” Sasuke for once sided with his older brother, now energetically nodding his head. “So, you have to swear not to tell anyone else about where we are. In return, I will not hurt these Genin that you brought here.”
“What?” Naruto mouthed to his sensei. “You aren’t seriously going to say yes are you-?”
“Of course!” Kakashi said rather speedily. His lone eye yet again curved into a happy, upside down u. Sakura seemed surprised by the sensei’s sudden answer. “These two kids just wanted to speak to Sasuke, that’s all.”
“Yeah, we want to also ask Sasuke a question,” Sakura chimed in. Naruto grinned contentedly.
Itachi seemed slightly amused by the Konoha shinobi’s abnormal actions, but accepted their answer. Kakashi spoke to Itachi, while the three pre-teens were almost instantly engaged in conversation.
“You could’ve made me grounded for life!” Sasuke whispered, careful not to be heard by his older brother. “Even though he’s usually gentle to me he has a rough side.”
“Yeah, scary,” Naruto replied indifferently. “Now, down to business. We saw your fast reflexes and all, and Kakashi-sensei said that since you were trained under your brother you must be very good. Your brother did teach you about shinobi stuff, right?”
“Yeah, go on,” Sasuke answered, now interested in what the two Konoha shinobi wanted to say.
“Well, we just lost a teammate, so we wanted to know if you wanted to join our Team Seven. The Hokage lets Jounin replace lost teammates with others. It won’t hurt bringing you in, right? At least, Kakashi-sensei says its okay,” Sakura stated.
Sasuke blinked, the opportunity to do what he wanted to do in the first seven years of his life coming back to him. He can be a shinobi. They allowed him to. There was just one problem. His gaze was turned to his older brother, who wasn’t even half listening to the now overjoyed Jounin ranting on and on. Would he approve? He should, it’s been my dream all my life! If he doesn’t, he’s no better than Kaa-san and Tou-san…or is that true?
“Well? What do you think?” Sakura and Naruto asked, their eyes bright with expectations.
They really want me to say yes, Sasuke thought desperately. “Uh, I have to ask Nii-san, first, if that’s okay.” Naruto seemed a little discouraged, but he suddenly urged him to go ask now. Sasuke nervously approached his older brother, whose attention was now entirely focused on him. Kakashi didn’t notice that Itachi’s gaze was off of him, and he was still ranting on and on. “Nii-san, they gave me an offer.”
“An offer? What kind of offer?” Itachi asked.
“They want me to join their team.”
Itachi, had an intake of breath for a moment. Sasuke could see that he was hesitant. He stared hopefully into his brother’s eyes. Sasuke hoped that his expression read: Please, oh, please! I really want this and you know it! Itachi read his expression. “I’ll think about it, okay?”
It wasn’t so bad that he was instantly rejected. He turned to Naruto and Sakura, and whispered that he’ll think about it, and that they should leave now before his older brother really blows. Naruto and Sakura understood, saying that he should leave a message of their answer at Kakashi’s apartment. They gave him his address, and they left, leaving Itachi and Sasuke in the room all alone.
“Sasuke,” Itachi quietly said.
“Yeah?” Sasuke bit his lip uneasily. Itachi might actually let this go. Or he might just get really angry and ground him for life as he said before. “What is it, Nii-san?” Sasuke turned around to boldly at his older brother.
“You said that day nothing special happened.”
“N…nothing did.”
“But they claimed that they spoke to you, and saw you that day.”
“I didn’t consider it special.”
Itachi stared at his younger brother with eyes filled with concern. Sasuke never talked back to his brother like that. “Sasuke, you know that…”
“I stood up for you five years ago!” Sasuke yelled, anger yet again rising up in him for the first time in a long time. “Why don’t you let me stand up for myself now!?” Sasuke was shocked with the tone of his voice. He was now very depressed, and seeing the gloomy look on his brother’s face made him feel worse.
Itachi sighed, apparently giving in. “Fine, we’ll return to Konoha.” Sasuke was half-happy, half-sad. He was going to miss the private life he shared with his brother…but, he was finally going to become a shinobi… “But, Sasuke…be careful being a shinobi.”
“You’re not returning to being a shinobi, too?” Sasuke asked hopefully. He would have really enjoyed it if Itachi returned to being an ANBU.
“Iie, Sasuke. They still don’t know about us running away. If they accept us back to Konoha, I might return to the ANBU,” Itachi calmly answered.
He still sounds so hesitant…Sasuke thought.
“Just be careful. Don’t die.”
“I know.”
“You promise?”
Sasuke flinched. It was his turn…his turn to try and keep a promise. He was completely determined not to let Itachi down. He was completely determined to keep every promise that he made in his entire life.
But still was that rising a feeling that was raising his spirits up so high that he thought he might touch the sun. His heart was pounding with excitement, wanting to run over to Konoha and reciting the message that he was in.
He was going to be a shinobi.
Meh, the turn of Sasuke's life XD
There's nothing to do in the world. I have to make some lanyards for my friends and I also have to work on my project. It's going to be seven pages now that I'm adding another psalm in...
I hate my life!!!
I'm teaching myself Japanese, too. I only know a little bit, not many words...I have a English to Japanese and Japanese to English Dictionary.
I printed out a card for my mom just recently, though Mother's Day wasn't until later. The theme of it is mainly Uchiha Mikoto...
I have a headache.
Yesterday I went over my friends' house because our parents had to go to a funeral. I brought our Wii, but I forgot the controllers. Note to self: Never change while packing up the Wii... I have to forget something, don't I?
