Despair is a strange fox girl who claims she is Miles' (Tails) older sister. She is not, but she states that he likes to pretend she is because she is so nice to him and is also appears 'too young to be a mom'. She loves Tails very much and will stop at nothing to protect him. When she attacks Amy, she suddenly collapses as soon as she weilds a knife to the poor girl's throat. That is then she is taken to Chris' home, and she is kept there to heal. After awakening, she is extremely quiet and distant, except to Tails of whom she is always hanging around. Then after some time of readjusting, she becomes attached to these 'strangers'. Sonic and co. are very happy to have a new friend in the group, but Knuckles isn't convinced. He finds that there is something strange about her, and he intends to find out. Shadow temporarily sides with him to find out the truth of her past, but for his own reasons only. Like first off, she has jet black and crimson fur, so he begins to suspect that she may be a clue to his past. (This is during the time Shadow still has amnesia.) Anyway, he soon realizes that this fox child refuses to go down without a fight. She and Shadow soon create a rivalry consisting of blood, weapons, races, and the occasional biting and scratching. She, like all the others has a strong dislike for Dr. Eggman. She makes this known when she shows up at his base and begins to destroy everything in sight ONLY because Eggman's robots had wrecked Tails' machinary, which he was able to fix in no time because of just minor injury to it. Despair soon begins to take an interest in Shadow, finding that she seemed to be having the same love for him like she did Tails, only much stronger and deeper, but she can't seem to settle on that thought, so she just tries to kill him. She had one chance to finally be rid of him, but she didn't take it. (Awww... she DOES care!)

As for powers, talents, and weapons, she has many powerful and fatal gifts that make her so frightening. She can run at super-speed like Sonic and Shadow, but unlike them, she reaches a limit after about 500 miles. She is also able to expand her claws to create long crimson nails that secrete a deadly poison or acid when hitting their target. She doesn't have two tails like Miles, but she can travel pretty easily by the shadows, jumping from dark corner to dark corner. This is also considered a good way to hide from predators or to get away from the heat of battle when it becomes too much. Sadly, Despair is very stubborn and will fight until the other is down or she passes out. Lastly, Desapir holds a long sword that glows with a dark purple aura and can slice clean through anything. This is only used for dark purposes. It is discovered by Knuckles, who becomes even more troubled now that he found that it was to be hidden.

Despair does wield a secret or two. Dark and dreadful tales that could shatter everything she has worked for, which turns out to not be much. That is why she is so desperate to silence Shadow and Knuckles, for if Sonic found out, she'd never see Tails again. And that is her worst fear.
