Bandai Announces Steamboy Game
Steamboy, the latest directorial project from Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira), was one of this year's most hyped movies in Japan. And where there's hype and anime, there's sure to be one name in close quarters: Bandai. Today, Bandai announced a PlayStation 2 adaptation of Steamboy, titled simply Steamboy.

In this action game, players take control of thirteen-year-old James Ray Steam who's fleeing those in pursuit of him and the "steam ball" invention that was sent to him by his grandfather. The game lets players experience the latter half of the movie, starting at the base of Steam Castle, as Ray attempts to make his way to his father, Edy's, side. While the background of the game is the same as that of the movie, the game is said to feature an original storyline.
Just as it's the center of the movie's storyline, the steam ball is at the center of the game. Players make use of the steam ball for all sorts of moves, including enemy attacks and a double jump. You'll have to collect gears located throughout stages in order to power up your steam ball, adding new capabilities as you progress.

In addition to steam ball moves, Ray has a number of stock adventuring moves at his disposal, from climbing ladders to opening treasure boxes and pushing crates. In all, you'll be able to make Ray perform fifty moves as you attempt to work your way through all the puzzles in Steam Castle.

The game will also feature numerous mini games which players will have to clear in order to progress. Some of these will require some thought.

Many of the characters from the movie will make an appearance in the game. Heroine Scarlet O'hara takes a major role in the game, working with Ray in some stages. James Lloyd Steam, Ray's grandfather, offers hints to players who communicate with him via devices set up throughout the stage.

The bad guys, Alfred Smith and Jason Stubs, also appear in the game, serving as a hindrance to Ray. These two control the giant mechs which appear at the end of each stage as bosses. Will Ray be able to defeat these giant creatures using his grandfather's invention?

Bandai was showing off Steamboy at the Entama entertainment festival in Tokyo today via a video trailer. The trailer revealed a game that captures the visual feel of the movie, with Ray's animation in particular standing out. How well all the steam ball gameplay elements come together will be determined once we've gotten our hands on the game's controls, of course.

Cooperation from the movie's production staff should ensure lots of bragging rights for Bandai when Steamboy sees Japanese PS2 release in Spring of 2005. The game is currently fifty-percent complete.
