Another awesome idea from me! =O
Just a few minutes ago, I was on the phone checking up on the status of our wireless having-been-activated-ness via SBC's auto-answer system (i.e., "press 1 for installation, press 2 for technical support..."), and from the mundane emptiness that occupied my skull at the time, an idea was--without my consent--born, grown, and made to take over all of my conscious thought. This is a great idea. A fantastic idea. It's perhaps (dare I say it?) the best idea I've ever had in the last week month.

So before you erupt into an energy cloud of pure anxiety, I'll just give it to you straight: a giant, auto-answer choose-your-own-adventure game.

The main menu
After you dial the number for the game, you're taken to an initial menu, just like with any auto-answer system. This will give you options for logging in (your character would probably be created on the game's website, which I'll discuss later), checking player ranks, getting news updates, and so on and so forth. To login, your character would have his own number code, so you might dial 1 for login, then dial 98235 to actually log your character in. It would also be possible to use your phone number as your code, so that you could automatically log in without having to dial anything, but that would both limit people to one character per phone line (siblings, remember) and make it to where they can't get in if they're not on their phone.

The game
This should be obvious enough. You can perhaps use your bottom three buttons (*, 0, and #) to look around, check your inventory, and check your state, and you'd use the others to move in a direction or choose an action from the list you're given. Pretty simple stuff, and if it's too complicated to do on a phone system, you could take out the inventory and personal state, and just play the game as it is narrated by the story.

MULTIPLAYORZ?!?!
As I hinted when I talked about being able to check player ranks, multiplayer could very well be an option. By controlling the phones via computer, it could be pretty easy to keep records of different player statuses.

Website
Where news, maps, information, character creation, and troubleshooting would all be centered. Since Alan's so desperate to get me onto his blogroll, maybe he'd be so kind as to do the hosting, eh? ;)

Not that this would ever really happen, but what reason is that to stop thinking about it?
