Chapter 1:

A New Editor

A young woman by the name of Raine was walking down a small dirt path in a sort of forest region in Japan. It was winter at the time, so snow could be seen in areas and everyone was either inside with the heaters on or by the fire, or were bundled up in large furry coats. Raine was holding a small piece of notebook paper in one mitten covered hand and stifling a yawn with the other. Raine was paler than the average person should be and had extremely long blonde hair. She stopped, looked at the paper in her hand then up at a traditional looking Japanese home. “Well, here goes nothing.” she said to herself, opening the front door and going to the second. “E-excuse me, is anyone home?” she called politely.

“Hm?” came the answer as the paper door was slid open, revealing a tall, dark haired man wearing a traditional kimono standing in the doorway. “Is there something I can help you with?” he looked down at her, a slightly curious look in his eyes.

“Yes, my name is Raine, Raine Hiroshima…you must be Shigure, am I right?” she replied with a smile, “If you are, then well…I’m your new editor. The previous one quit, saying she just couldn’t handle the pressure…I don’t really understand what she meant by it though…” she explained.

“A new editor? Nobody informed me of this…well, come in, come in, we’ll talk in my office, when do you start?”

“I start immediately, or so I’m told…” she answered, stepping into the house “You have a lovely home by the way.” she pointed out as they walked down a hallway into a small study containing many bookshelves and a desk with papers scattered messily about the top of it. He offered her a chair, and she gratefully accepted, setting a letter on the table in front of him as her sat down across from him. “It’s from the previous editor, she asked me to give it to you.”

Shigure opened the letter, taking in the words that were written on the small sheet of parchment:

Dear Shigure Sohma,

In the time that I had as your Editor, I found that anything would be better than having a job with you! I just couldn’t take any more of your constant torments and jokes. As a solution, I have quit, and assigned Raine to be your new editor. Have fun with her, for I will not be around to test your pranks any longer. I only concern for her well being and hope she doesn’t break under the strain and torture like I have.

Yours Truly,

Meenay ((sp?))

“Oh my…” Shigure gasped thinking “Maybe I went too far…oh well, what is done is done.” He then folded the letter and placed it carefully on a shelf. “Well Raine, it seems that you are, indeed my new editor, and since you will be visiting often, why not meet the others who share this household with me?”

Raine beamed, “I’d love to, and I hope that I enjoy the time I get to spend with you as your editor.”

Chapter 2:

Meeting the Family

Shigure lead Raine to their kitchen, opened the door and shouted in a singsong voice, “Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, there is someone I would like you to meet!” Raine wondered why he shouted, but decided the matter was of little importance and peered around him at the three teens that sat around the table. One was a girl with brown hair and large eyes. As Shigure had opened the door, she shot up and started rambling, “I’m so sorry! I didn’t make you any lunch because I thought you were busy at work! Oh no, and we have a guest, I’ll make you something right away!” She then started to make more food at the kitchen. Shigure stopped her, saying, “Tohru, don’t bother, I’m sure she will not be staying too long, I just want her to meet you!”

After that seen, Raine observed the two boys at the table. One had bright orange hair and looked absolutely bored, resting one elbow on the table. The other, with gray hair, contradicted the other completely. Raine was shoved out of her observations as Shigure announced “Raine, this is Yuki, Kyo, and Tohru,” he pointed them out as he said their names, “ Yuki, Kyo, and Tohru, this is Raine, my new editor.”

Immediately, Raine and Tohru bowed at the same time saying simultaneously, “It’s a pleasure to meet you.” As they both rose, giving each other a smile, Kyo grunted, saying obnoxiously, “Whatever.”

Yuki on the other hand, gave a small smile and said in a whispery voice “Charmed.” Although, what he was thinking was, “…that poor woman…”

As Raine thought about how colorful the household seemed with such different personalities, Shigure and Tohru were talking over what to do for dinner “…Raine, would you like to join us?” she heard Tohru ask, as Shigure added “Oh yes, how better a way to introduce a new friend with the family?” he clapped his hands, joyous at the thought of it.

“Oh, all right…that sounds nice, I’ll gladly join you.” she answered, smiling at Tohru. Soon Shigure told her to sit and join them as Tohru made them all tea and Tohru looked up at Raine and pointed out, “Miss Raine, are you sick or something, because your face is awfully pale, even for the cold of the winter air!” she sort of went into panicking mode, until Kyo knocked her lightly on the head.

Raine looked a little sad at first, the looked back at them with a smile and explained, “No, I’m healthy…well, as healthy as I can get. I’m frail, you see…I’m was orphaned when I was young and got very ill then, so, I can never fully recover after that…I live by myself in a small apartment now.”

Nobody spoke a word, but Tohru dropped her cup, spilling the hot tea over Kyo’s lap, causing him to start screaming and cursing, Tohru to start panicking and trying to help, and Yuki calling Kyo an idiot. This caused Yuki and Kyo to start fighting, and Tohru to try and stop them to no avail. Shigure was laughing at the scene, but Raine, who had just announced her frailty, was getting overwhelmed by all the noise, and fainted.

Chapter 3:

A New Roommate

When Raine awoke, she was staring at the ceiling, and she was covered with the warmth of many thick, wooly blankets. “What….w-where am I…” she asked herself, looking around to see Tohru sitting in a chair next to the bed. Tohru was smiling, but from the look in her eyes, and the sound of her voice, you could tell that she was worried.

“Oh, you fainted a little while ago…I’m sorry, we caused to much commotion…you told us you were frail, and then we just did something to affect your health. I am so sorry.” Tohru replied, looking at the door as Shigure appeared there.

“Well, We’ve talked it over Raine, and it’s settled.” her said in a chipper way, tapping his small paper fan on the doorframe.

“..I’m sorry, but…what’s settled?” she asked, propping herself up on her elbows.

“Why, your new accommodations of course! You see, I found out that you could barely pay the rent for apartment, let alone your medical bill…so I talked it over with the rest of the family, and it has been agreed that you are now going to live here with us!” he explained, with a small giggle “Work will be much easier that way of course, and, we have a cousin, Hatori, who is a doctor, maybe we could persuade him to give you free check-ups.”

Raine was dumbfounded. Never in her life had someone been so kind to her before. “Well…I….but, I can’t just…” she stuttered, at a loss for words. She didn’t want to decline the offer, but it seemed as if it would be such a burden that she couldn’t just let them do that for her.

“Don’t be silly, we have a spare room, next to Tohru’s that your using now, and you know what they say, the more the merrier!” With that he was gone, off to relay the message to Yuki and Kyo. Tohru just smiled “It’ll be great, now I won’t be the only girl living with the Sohma’s.” she said, getting up “I’ll go make you some tea.”

“Wait, your not related to the Sohmas?” Raine asked her, who thought for sure that she was their sister or something.

“Oh no, like you, my mother and father are dead. I was living with my grandpa until he had to remodel his house…” she started, telling the whole story (except for the curse) about how she came to live with the Sohmas. After that, she left to go get Raine her tea, and Raine was left alone. Suddenly she heard Kyo shout something from the end of the hall and crept out of bed, quietly listening to a conversation going on between Shigure, Yuki, and Kyo.

“Damnit Shigure! What are you getting us into this time?” Kyo accused, slamming his fists on the table.

“Quiet Kyo, we can’t just leave her like that, all alone…she can barely support herself for goodness sake!” Shigure defended in a quieter tone.

“…all I want to know, is how Akito actually agreed to let her stay with us..” Yuki broke in, looking towards Shigure.

Shigure sighed, putting a hand over his face. “Let me tell you, it wasn’t easy….that’s for sure.” he answered, “I assured him that it was only for business, and that she had to stay…I told him that she would never learn our secret…”

The rest was unknown to Raine, having realized she now had no choice in the matter of staying with the Sohmas…and that they had a secret she was not supposed to know, she decided that she needed to give them their privacy. She was now going to be a member of the household, and she was grateful. But still, she couldn’t hide the fact that, something was strange about this family, and what she had overheard confirmed her suspicions.

Chapter 4:

Pranks

“Shigure! Shigure!” Raine called, checking some of the rooms in the house, “Where did he run off to…” she pondered, after not being able to find him anywhere in the house. Several weeks had passed since she brought her things and started to live with the Sohmas. She hadn’t found anything strange, and had practically forgotten the conversation she had heard that night.

“Miss Raine is there something I can help you with, you seem troubled.” Yuki asked her, walking out of the kitchen.

Raine sighed, “It’s Shigure, he’s gone and I can’t find him anywhere! To make matters worse, the deadline for his new story is coming up next week, I doubt that he’s even started! If he keeps disappearing like this, it won’t get done…” Raine sighed again. Her job was already off to a bad start. She didn’t mind, but it was Shigure she was worried about. If things were always like this, they could both get fired.

“Well…that would explain it…” Yuki started, but didn’t finish, if he did, she would probably quit her job as well, and so far, the family had gotten quite used to her. Especially Tohru, she and Raine had become very close, almost like sisters. Yuki didn’t want anything to ruin her happiness. “Never mind, I’m sure he’ll show up sooner or later.” he added after a little thought, giving her an apologetic smile and walking outside.

No sooner had Yuki exited than Shigure strode into the room. “There you are, I’ve been looking all over for you, I was afraid something happened….” she didn’t continue. Looking up and down at Shigure, she saw that he was wearing a loose robe, had a towel slung over his shoulders, and his black hair was wet and dripping.

Shigure giggled, “There is nothing like a nice hot shower to get the creative juices flowing!” He then looked at Raine, waiting for something, for that response of agony, annoyance, something. He never got it. For Raine simply smiled in an understanding way and replied, “Oh, so that’s where you went off to. If you wanted to take a shower, you just should have told me. That way I wouldn’t have had to look all over for you.”

He could not believe it. His previous editor went crazy if he was gone for 5 seconds. “I guess I’ll have to try harder…I love a challenge.” he muttered after she left. “I’m going to go write now!” he called, going into his office and shutting the door.

A few hours later, Raine went to the office to check up on him. She had been in her room and was sure he was still there. “Shigure I’m coming in.” she called out before sliding the door open to discover it empty. “Where did he!” she exclaimed, covering her mouth with her hands. Going again to explore the house, she found him eating soba at the table in the kitchen. “Ah Raine, won’t you join me?” he asked with a polite smile.

“I’d love to join you!” Raine replied happily, sitting at the table across from him and filling a bowl before adding “You know Shigure, if you were hungry, you could have just told me and I would have made something for you.”

For the second time, he was awestruck. Again, he thought, “That didn’t work either? Strange, by now she should be begging me to get to work on my novel….maybe this isn’t going to work…maybe she’s just…different.” he looked over at her with an odd look as she ate her soba happily. His heart fluttered somewhat. He shook his head and thought “…now that was strange…”

Chapter 5:

Check-ups With Hatori

“So you’re the Sohma family’s personal doctor?” Raine asked Hatori Sohma, a dark haired, serious looking man that appeared to be around Shigure’s age.

“That is correct,” he answered from across the room while getting some medical supplies out from a drawer, “Of course, I make an acception for Tohru, and now…for you as well.” He then walked over to the medical bed where Raine was sitting on with a stethoscope, placed it under her neck and instructed, “ Now take a deep breath and let it out slowly.”

Raine did as instructed, but after her lungs were filled with a certain amount of air, the breath she was taking started to sound more ragged and she suddenly stopped what she was doing, quickly covering her moth with one hand as she started to cough violently.

“I-I’m sorry,” Raine said after the coughing had died down, “I didn’t mean to…”

“There’s no need to apologize.” Hatori cut in abruptly. Taking notes, then tearing off a prescription and handing it to Raine, he explained, “Like Yuki, you have weak bronchial tubes. This explains your frailty, for they are in much worse condition then his, and I’m sure this is because they were never poperly treated. Yuki’s aren’t as severe, but we’ve been working on his bronchial tubes for a long time, your however, are to damaged to fix.” Then, indicating the prescription he said, “Come back this Thursday to pick that up…oh, and make sure to have someone come with you, the winter cold is bad for your bronchial tubes.”

The real reason was that he didn’t want her to have a run in with Akito on her next visit….but that was a matter that was better left unspoken.

With that he went back to putting away his medical supplies, an indication that this appointment was over. Raine hopped off the medical bed, gave a respectful bow to Hatori and exited the room. Outside, Yuki and Tohru were waiting for her.

“Miss Hiroshima, I hope that everything worked out?” Yuki said to Raine in his usual whispery voice as they walked through the halls of Sohma estate.

“Oh yes, Hatori was a….real gentleman.” Raine replied, struggling to find the right words to say.

“Hatori is a gentleman!” Tohru replied happily, “He’s one of my favorite members of the zodiac, year of the dragon--I mean!” she quickly cut off when she realized what she had said. She and Yuki both froze, but Raine, oblivious to the real meaning of that statement, just looked back at then and said, “So he was born in year of the dragon? I was born in the year of the snake myself…”

“Heheh…yah…” Tohru replied nervously, scratching the back of her head as they continued to walk.

Close call…Yuki thought, relief sweeping over him.
