Arizona
Supersition Mountion Spooks
Location: The Superstition Mountions, east of Phoenix, Arizona
The ghost in the Superstition Mountions are not a happy bunch. Many of them lost their lives while searching for a great gold mine known as the Lost Dutchman.
The lost Dutchman Mine is one of the most Famous treasure legends in the United States. Researchers think it was originally discoverd by the Peralta family, who were later killed by Apaches. A man named Jacob Waltz is belived to have relocated the gold mine in the 1800's. The mine was nicknamed after him, though he was German rather Dutch.
The location of the mine is a mystery today. No one is sure it even exists. Waltz told no onw where it was before he died, but he leaves clues behind. These clues have encouraged thousands of people to hunt for the gold mine over the years. As many as one hundred have died in the effort.
Legend has it that those whi search for treasure in the Supersition Mountions are doomed. Human skeletons of unknown identity have been discovered in the mountions fron time to time. What happened to these men?
Apache myth tells of a thunder God that lives in the Supersition Mountions and protects the mountions from trespassers.
In the 1800's, Native Americans killed some treasure hunters, whom they saw as troublemakers invading their land.
The deaths of others were more mysterious. In 1931, a man named Adolf Ruth may have come close to rediscovering the Lost Dutchman gold mine. He found a map, possibly created by the Peralta family, showing the mines location. Ruth set out to find the treasure, but never made it. His headless body was found in the Supersistion Mountions weeks later.
A prospector named James Kidd went into the mountions in search of treasure in 1949. He never returned.
Many think that the ghost of Jacob Waltz and other prospectors still wounder the mountions. No one is sure why. Perhaps they are jealously guarding their treasure. Or maybe the belive the treasure is cursed and are trying to warn others against searching for it---before they wind up as ghosts, too!!
