Chapter 19

When Izayoi and Krad arrived in the dome, Tenji was standing over the unconscious bodies of Minoru and Ian. Seeing Izayoi brought something strange to the Shinigami; a memory from her past self. Shaking her head, the images went away, and she got ready to attack. Her parasol, which also concealed a katana, was held in both hands; one on the parasol’s handle and one on the katana’s hilt. Then, she charged at Izayoi, who was ready for the attack.

“Tenji, snap out of it!” Izayoi said, her voice in a pleading tone as she blocked the strike, “I don’t want to kill you.” The Shinigami laughed and pulled out the katana, making a small cut on Izayoi’s stomach. Wincing, she hobbled backward, while the Shinigami flew away for a moment. The hunter had cut her arm, and she was bleeding. This was an odd sight for her; her last incarnation had no blood. ‘I’m still mortal, then…’ Tenji thought, her brow furrowing as she retreated.

“I think you’re flattering yourself, human.” Tenji said, running her hand over the wound and sealing it, “you can’t kill me.” She smiled wickedly, and landed on the ground, raising the sword and the parasol. Izayoi smiled and nodded. This was going to be a fair fight, it seemed. Bowing slightly, the two girls ran toward one another, metal crashing against metal as they exchanged blows. Sparks showered upon the floor; it would have caught fire had it been made of wood.

The two stepped apart, panting and covered in blood. The Shinigami had forgotten to heal herself, but wasn’t planning on it. Izayoi… for some reason, she respected her. Then, they rushed back together in another exchange, ending in a similar look. Krad, who had been tending to Minoru and Ian, looked up in time to see them collide again. The clanging sounds made him shiver slightly, glad that he wasn’t fighting. Ian coughed slightly, a bit of blood rolling from his mouth and down his chin.

“Wha-what’s going on?” Ian asked, healing Minoru as Krad told him what had happened. The Shinigami’s aura… it had lightened since they’d been unconscious. Something had caused it to lighten. According to Krad, when the Shinigami’s aura turned black, this world would end, and everything would be swept over by a killing cloud. Ian shivered inwardly, relieved only when his friend Minoru awoke.

Izayoi was getting tired, and she could see the fatigue in her former friend. With a small grin, she made on last charge at the Death God. Ian hugged Minoru, not noticing the blush on his friend’s face, or noticing he’d hugged him at all. Krad looked away, not wanting to see what would happen. A loud slashing noise reverberated off the walls, and the sound of splattering blood reached their ears.

The two figures stood stock still for a few moments, standing facing away from one another. Then, Izayoi coughed loudly, and fell to her knees, spitting out blood. Shinigami grinned, and walked over to Izayoi, squatting and looking into Izayoi’s eyes. She’d re-sheathed the parasol sword, and strapped it along her back. It looked like the fight was over.

“Any last requests, Aruka Izayoi?” Tenji asked, feeling Izayoi’s death approaching. The girl nodded and mouthed the words. Shinigami asked her to repeat them aloud, or she’d kill her without finding out her dying wish. Swallowing hard, Izayoi looked into the Death God’s eyes. There were still traces of her best friend there. Smiling, she said it aloud.

“I want to give my friend Tenji a hug goodbye,” Izayoi said, looking at the Shinigami, “not you, though. My actual friend.” The Death God rolled her eyes, and loosened her grip on the body, allowing Tenji back through. Her eyes returned to normal, and she hugged Izayoi tight. Smiling, she hugged her back, and it looked as if New Earth would be dead soon. Then, there was a stabbing noise, and Tenji looked rather surprised. The sword that was in her parasol was now sticking through her back, through her, and right into Izayoi.

“But… why?” Tenji gasped, blood rolling down her mouth as she spoke. Izayoi grinned, and held the sword in place. She coughed loudly, blood spattering on Tenji slightly. The men who were watching were startled; they hadn’t been expecting anything like this to happen. Once Izayoi regained her composure, she looked into Tenji’s eyes, a few warm tears falling out.

“I didn’t want you… to go down my road…” Izayoi smiled, “you’d be killing the entire human race… and besides, we can meet again… in the next life if the world is still… here…” Her smile seemed genuine for the first time in a while, and Tenji smiled again. Then, Izayoi’s eyes drooped shut, and she fell on Tenji, who could barely support her. Bitter tears fell down her face, but she smiled through them, her hands straying to the hilt of the katana in her back.

“In the next life.” Tenji said simply, pulling out the sword. Once it left her body, so did her spirit, and she flopped to the ground, landing next to Izayoi. Krad looked on sadly, wishing he could’ve prevented it. Ian and Minoru were crying quietly, but Ian wiped off his tears. Then, the three of them stood up, looking around the room.

“If New Earth is saved… why does this feel so… crummy?” Ian asked, looking at Minoru as he hugged him. The two older men thought for a moment, before Minoru smiled and kissed Ian’s forehead.

“They died to save New Earth…” Minoru said, gesturing to Izayoi and Tenji’s corpses, “I think they deserve a proper burial, don’t you?” Ian blushed slightly from the kiss, but nodded and ran over to the bodies. Soon, they carried them outside, and buried their fallen comrades in the desert sands.

***

Minoru, Ian and Krad returned to the capital, where they were greeted by the survivors. Everyone had seen the dark cloud that was forming above the Hunter’s lair, and were glad to see it lift. Terra hugged her brother, glad to see him back home. Ian and Krad didn’t have family, so they just made due with Terra and Minoru, glad to be alive. They regarded that day as “Savior’s Day”, regarding the people who’d lost their lives saving the world.

And, I, personally, think that it was a good name for the holiday.

The End

Well, I hope you liked the end. I'd have put more, but I didn't know what else to put! Also going to correct the "frying" error in the last chapter. So HA!
