The Curious Pair.

“….We’re finally here…”

Life can be quite ordinary for most people.

“…Keep quiet and low. Don’t want to arouse suspicion…”

This one sentence happens to be my most favourite saying and can mean many different things about many different people.
They are the ones who grow up to become doctors, so they can help the sick; bank managers, so they can help others attain their money; or even the local newsagent, so they can help their customers with convenience goods. But for others, life is more than what it seems…

“…I think the area’s clear. Wait there whilst I shift this mirror…”

Especially for Leya Fresco. Her life was far from ordinary and yet, she had no idea of the powers within her gentle soul. Just like her and hundreds before (three hundred and fifty-one Frescos to be precise), she was blessed with the gift of magic.

“…Energy seems strong here. We must be close…”

But Leya’s magic was not of the ordinary kind. Not the magic where rabbits are pulled from top hats or white tigers are danced around on stage and disappeared into exploding boxes. No, Leya had magic so powerful, if fallen into evil, it would spell doom for all the Realms.

“…We’ve been all over the north-west and the energy is strongest here. I knew we were close when we hit Preston…”

This powerful magic was right under Leya’s nose…well, actually on her hand.
*
It was a calm and damp September night. The pavements were stained with the night’s rain, the clouds had parted revealing a smooth, deep blue sky with twinkling stars and one large white moon, reflecting its mystical aura onto the cul de sac of Crescent Point. Even though it was morning, it was far too early for any of the slumbering Mortals to wake. The only movement made was that of a curious pair.
“Twilight seems calmer in the Mortal Realm…”
This was the voice of a young man, dressed to imperfection and slightly tired from his travels. He had a slender face with astonishing yellow eyes, messy blonde hair with the odd leaf sticking out from where he had been hiding. He turned to his partner, who was indeed far stranger.
“So what do you think then? You’ve been awfully quiet lately.”
“……”
“Don’t look at me like that.”
His partner looked up and ogled him with his burning amber eyes. Flapping his wings, the fiery falcon swept up into the air and perched on his companions shoulder.
“Its been hard, I know, but we’re close. I can feel it.”
His partner said nothing and gazed towards the horse shoe of neatly arranged doll’s houses with perfect gardens and accurately trimmed hedges.
“I know she’s here, she has to be. The energy we’ve been following is definitely stronger here-“
The fiery companion chirped and whistled to reply.
“We are not lost! Wasn’t my fault we ended up in that antique shop, now was it? Maybe if the Mirror Guardian had minded her own business, we’d have been here earlier and not taken a detour to piggin’ Manchester!”
He sighed heavily and scratched the back of his neck, pulling a leaf out of his hair. There was a sense of great worry in his tone and dread upon his handsome face. You would be too, had you heard the news…
“I can’t believe its actually happened,” he sighed with anguish. “After almost a decade, of pain-staking, hard-working, slave-draining work! I- I feel- ahhh!”
The falcon chirped some more, this time more gently. He held a crimson wing over his partner’s arm and whistled.
“I know, I know. I’m- just a little edgy that’s all…can’t believe its happened though. He’s actually managed to do it. Took us years- decades- centuries even, to catch him…then he escapes again after fourteen year….”
He turned to the seven houses in front and with no thought considered, smiled smugly.
“But I bet she’s here. We’ll find her before he does.”
“…?…”
“Well, I think she is? I’m following energy here. I’ve had my mind tampered with, I can’t remember where she lives?!”
His feathery friend leapt off his shoulder, landed in his lap and chirped in a way, I can only describe as laughter.
“S’not funny, it hurt! We all had it done remember? Any way, we have to find her. Especially after what the Council said. She has to know and I don’t care if I get suspended from my Quarter either.”
He jumped off the wall he was sat on, stretched and breathed in the fresh morning air, rubbing his backside to where it had gone numb.
“Dawn, they’ll be waking soon. We better move.”
The curious pair began to walk down the cycle path, discussing how to plan their day.
“I’ll head off towards the town center to see if I can get any info. You however, head towards the schools. I’ve heard there’s a large, old high school around here. She’s bound to be there. Go now and if you happen to suspect anyone, test them.”
With a last smile and a wave, the fiery falcon flew off into the distance. By himself, the young stranger turned and walked the other way, contemplating various thoughts flowing through his troubled mind.
“Uh, I can see my name now on the Council’s most recent suspension board:
‘Derrick Emanuel Lackson suspended for saving the Three Realms, when impending doom was on their doorstep – Thanks anyway’. Oh well…”
