Prolouge

After years of searching, I had finally found the entrance to the passage spoke of in legends, upon its hearth were runes of pain, sorrow, and the demise of an ancient race. I crept further into the wet, dark tunnel. My curiosity buried me, and I continued into the darkness. It was pitch black, and there was not the slightest of noises. I became enveloped within the caves, wondering how far I had walked. I became weary, my feet became heavy and I fell into a deep chasm. I landed hard on my back upon the rocky surface, and I screamed in pain. I managed to pick myself up again…I couldn’t breath, there was no air, it felt as if my lungs were being constricted. I panicked and searched for an escape, patting down the cave walls like a blind fool. I found a diminutive passage, barely large enough to squeeze through. As I went though the small channel the opposing rock ripped at my chest, and spikes bore into my legs as I forced myself though its grip. I stumbled out of the path into a luminous field, here I was able to breath, and took the liberty of sitting down to recover my determination. When I sat, I felt a jolt go through me, and I jumped up shocked. I turned around to find a mechanical…thing, lifting small glowing crystals out of the wall, with many spider like tentacles. Not knowing what to think of it, I poked it with a small stick. It made unusual noises, made up of many quick yelps. It sounded like its insides were churning as it moved, and all its hundreds of legs moved perfectly in sync. Steam started bellowing from the creatures back, and it took off in one direction across the field. I commenced chasing it though the winding caves. It was fast, and I had to sprint to keep up with it. As I was running I passed the same kind of creatures, but they seemed abandoned, and dysfunctional, so I decided to continue chasing this one. I came to a huge cavern filled with foreign funguses, and gigantic mushroom-like trees. The creature quickly ran up one of these trees and efficiently dug out a hole in its soft skin. I couldn’t reach it now, and I was exaughsted, so I leaned up against the trunk of the tree the insect was in. I leaned my head up and saw it peeking out of its shelter; it then began to bark at me, almost like a squirrel. I couldn’t tell if it was alive, or what. So I decided to have a closer look, feeling as if it wasn’t a threat…but that notion would soon change. I took off my belt, and used it to aid me in scaling up the trunk of the tree. I got closer and closer to the creature, and it began hissing infernally. I wasn’t so sure whether or not I wanted to see it so bad anymore…but regardless of my disposition, I was very interested, so I continued. If it was a machine…if it wasn’t alive, who could create such a thing? A thing that acted like other animals, adapted their personalities, and acted as if I had invaded its personal territory! Such would be a miraculous achievement on any level, what could this thing be!? I thought to myself as I continued climbing the huge tree. Adrenaline pumped through my veins, I looked down, and was dizzied by how high I was; it looked a lot shorter from the ground…I finally reached its dwelling, and I peeked my head inside the hole…it was dark…maybe it was gone. I leaned even further inside. All of a sudden I heard a blood curdling scream, and the creature rushed out of the darkness towards me…
