Tifa and Cloud were childhood friends but parted way's when Cloud left his hometown of Nibelheim to join SOLDIER. When her parents died, Tifa also left Nibelheim and headed to Midgar. Soon after opening her bar, Tifa's Seventh Heaven, she met Barret and joined his ragtag group of rebels known as AVALANCHE.
Personal Bio
Tifa and Cloud grew up together in the small town a Nibelheim. After loosing her mother at a young age, more tragic events followed as she lost her father and her town. After the town of Nibelheims destruction 5 years ago, she travel to Midgar where she became involved in AVALANCHE. One day she was at the Sector 7 train station when she came upon the disoriented Cloud. She was happy to see him but seems disturbed by the way he acted. He remembered things that he shouldn't know and didn't remember things that he should have. More than once throughout the game Tifa asks Cloud odd questions such as, "Cloud, you really are you, aren't you?", this leads the player to wonder whether Tifa knows more than she is telling Cloud and the rest of the party. Unfortunately, the player will most likely not concentrate on these "hints" since the entire first disk is centered around Aeris. All the secrets she knows will not come to light until after her ( Aeris's) death.
The point where things all come apart is inside the Whirlwind Maze. The team approaches Sephiroth and are drawn into illusion's of the Nibelheim Incident, only there are a few slight differences. Cloud doesn't believe these "memories" to be the truth and ignores them. However, Sephiroth will interrupt, and his words arouse more questions within Cloud's mind; question's of his existence. Tifa's hesitation and anxious state only help confirm the fact that Cloud has no idea who he truly is. Cloud will then begin to "lose it" and gives the black materia to Sephiroth, this causes the WEAPONS to awaken and Meteor to be summoned.
Tifa will begin to feel the guilt of keeping all those secrets from Cloud and vows to find him. For a time, she will be the party leader in Cloud's absence. Eventually, the party will venture to Mideel, where Cloud was found washed up on shore nearly dead. Tifa will rejoice when she overhears two townspeople talking about Cloud, but her happiness is shattered when she finds him in a Coma like state. She will then leave the party for a time to tend to Cloud's every need. After the party attempts to recover two of the HUGE MATERIA, they will return to Mideel to see Tifa. This is when Ultimate WEAPON will attack the town, as they try to escape the destruction, Cloud and Tifa both fall into the Life stream.
During the life stream event, she will reveal what she knows about Cloud's past to help him pull together the remaining pieces of his lost memory. Once this occurs, Cloud will come to terms with his existence and seek out Sephiroth. Tifa will loyally follow Cloud, just as she always has, out of her love for him.
Tifa was born in the small, quiet, country town of Nibelheim. I will assume that she lead a rather uneventful childhood, up until the age of 12 or so, when she lost her mother. (they never specifically tell you how old Tifa was when her mother died) Losing her mother at such an early age put a dark shadow on her young life. (This could also have something to do with her adult personality, mature, quiet and deep. Losing her mother probably forced her to mature a lot quicker.) Depression set in and she began to wonder what really happened to her mother (her mothers spirit,that is). One day Tifa and two other friends will venture to the entrance of Mt. Nibel, followed by the young Cloud. Her friends are easily scared away, saying that "no ones ever crossed those mountains." Tifa pursue's her goal, unaffected by the boys scary comments, while the two boys run away. Cloud will pursue Tifa, when he finally catches up to her, the ground gives out from under them and they plummet to the ground below. Cloud escaped any serious injury, but Tifa was badly injured and remain in a coma for seven days. Her father blamed Cloud for the incident and refuse to allow him to see Tifa.
Because of Tifa's father, Cloud was forced to meet Tifa in secret at the town well. When she arrives, Cloud will begin to tell her that in the Spring, he's leaving Nibelheim for Midgar. Cloud's goal is to join SOLDIER and to become just like General Sephiroth. Tifa seem's a bit sad at Cloud's decision and ask's him to make her a promise: If she is ever in trouble, Cloud will come to her rescue. She wanted to experience that at least once in her life. Cloud, although a bit shocked at Tifa's request, agree's.
Tifa is very direct with most of her feelings but shy about the subject of love. As you progress throughout the game, you realize how scared Tifa seems to be of showing her true feelings for Cloud, perhaps she is afraid of rejection? By the way she acts, you can tell she goes with her feelings but thinks a lot too, this causes her to second guess herself (which you can tell at times by how she acts). Tifa is also a very quiet and secretive person. After all, she kept the entire secret of what she knew about Clouds past to herself. This, when you think about it, shows how much she truly cares for Cloud. She does not want to make him worry or have to actually think and remember the awful things that happended in the past. At times, you can see she really want's to tell Cloud everything, but doesn't. (again the second guessing herself) Being very bright, cheery , and optimistic, she cheers up the group and gets them thinking more positively. She is also mature and aware of the world around her. (considering she was on her own by the age of 15 and lived in the Midgar Slums.)
When Tifa and Aeris meet, you see that Tifa sort of takes the backstage. Tifa and Aeris are both equally beautiful women but perhaps Tifa began to feel she couldn't compete with Aeris' bubbily and forward personality. Because Aeris was so forward and Tifa was not direct with her feelings (for Cloud) it may have seemed like Aeris "stole" Cloud away from Tifa. This isn't really the case though, I think Tifa willing allowed the AerisXCloud relationship to advance because she couldn't find a way to express her feelings.
Tifa harbors deep hatred toward Sephiroth, which is understandable for what he did to her and her town. She vowed to get her revenge, this shows that she can hold deep grudges (Of course,anyone would hold a grudge if their family and friends were murdered).
Aeris: Despite the Aeris and Tifa hate groups, these two were good friends during the game. They seemed to click well right after meeting each other, even though it was under rather akward circumstances (*coughs* Cloud in drag *coughs*). They socialized at certain times in the game, an example being when the group arrives under Junon the first time. The two go off together and start a conversation once everyone agrees that Cloud should climb up into the City of Junon. Aeris death seems to really effect Tifa. She strokes her face and runs away, presumibly crying. The two didn't hate each other, they just happened to like the same guy, whooptie do.
Barret: Barret and Tifa seem pretty close throughout the game. I would image they would have to be since Tifa is a member of Avalanche. Tifa assumes the role of "mother" for his child, Marlene. I think Barret is really grateful for that. Their relationship is one of old friends, but Barret, being older and a bit wiser about the world, looks after Tifa almost as if she were his daughter.
Marlene: Tifa assumes the role of mother for Marlene. Which is good, it helps to have a female role model for a little girl. Marlene obviously loves Tifa, this becomes apparent when Cloud first encounters here (Marlene) you see her clinging to Tifa's hip.
Yuffie : Like everyone else in the party, Tifa gets a bit irritated with Yuffie throughout the game. I think if SQUARE had made them interact more in the game (the two secret character Yuffie and Vincent don't interact with anyone) Tifa and Yuffie could have been more like sisters. She would be a good role model for the snotty, hyperactive teenager. Other than that, the only time you see any type of interaction between the two is when Yuffie steals the parties materia and run's off to Wutai.
Vincent: They don't interact much. I would image Vincent would tolerate Tifa to an extent on a personal level. Tifa is optimistic and bright but not extremely bubbily and irritating (like yuffie) so Vincent would probably enjoy talking to her. On a more intimate level I think she could empathize with him and all he's gone through.
Cid : Cid's personality and Tifa's personality are almost completly opposite each other. Despite that I think they get along well during the game. Tifa doesn't seem to like Cid's abusive way of speaking but she is surprised at how nice he can be (thinking on his speech about the planet being a "sick kid" scared in spinning in the lonely universe.)
Zangan : Zangan isn't a main character by any means but he does appear breifly and plays a role in Tifa's life. In Nibelheim, Zangan trained Tifa in his own special style of Martial Arts. He told the then 16 year old Cloud that she was his best student and had great potential. Zangan also assisted in getting surviving residents out of the burning Nibelheim. Later in the game you can discover a note to Tifa from Zangan containing her ultimate limit break "Final Heaven".
