japanese romaji meaning / time of use
n/a ohayoo gozaimasu good morning! used until about 10 a.m.
n/a konnichiwa hello. a rather informal greeting used from about 10 a.m. until sundown.
n/a kombanwa good evening.
n/a sayoonara good-bye. on more formal occasions one uses 'shitsurei shimasu.'
n/a oyasumi nasai good night. said at night before going to bed. when parting at night outside the home. 'sayoonara' is more usual.
n/a ja mata well then... said informally when aprting from relatives or friends.
n/a itte rasshai so long (lit. "go and come back") said to members of a household as they leave the house.
n/a itte mairimasu so long (lit. "[i'm] going and coming back") this is the reply to 'itte rasshai'.
