Anchor Points
If you ever want to get anything done over a long period of time, you need what I like to call "anchor points." Diets, exercise, learning skills, etc.--all of these can be improved with anchor points.

What's an "anchor point"?

An anchor point is a point in time where you're anchored to the task. Here's some personal examples:

(1) I've been going to the gym about 3-4 times per week for the last 6 months. How did I keep this up?

I'm registered for a gym class that I force myself to attend every Thursday. No matter what, I never miss it. Just the simple act of going on Thursdays gets my body more enthusiastic to go to the gym the rest of the week.

Without this anchor point, I'd probably miss a week, then two weeks, then three, etc. It's happened before.

(2) I do my weekly poll and quiz for theOtaku. This keeps my mind on the site and keeps me working hard the other 5 days of the week.

(3) I've even seen couples set anchor points in their relationship. A guaranteed date once a week or once every two weeks, for example. It really works!

People can easily fall into laziness despite their best intentions. The best way to combat this laziness is with anchor points. And anchor points work best when you're truly anchored to the task, when there's some sort of penalty for missing it. This is why some people take classes to learn things instead of trying to teach themselves.

(Classes are harder to excuse away.)

So, whenever you want to tackle a long-term task, the first question you should ask yourself is: How should I set my anchor points?
